Faro has the only airport of the area, so from here most visitors are spreading out to the several touristic centres of the Algarve, the southern coast of Portugal. The city is as old as they come, founded by Phoenicians as an important colony in their Mediterranean network around 800 B.C. . Greeks, Romans, Goths and Moors lived here before the Portuguese King Alfonso III conquered Faro in 1249. Faro still has its medieval city wall that surrounds the historic city centre, the Vila-Adentro, and sports three of its original gatehouses. Unlike other cities more centred on tourism the atmosphere here is quite relaxed, but the 10.000 students of the University give the place a young and modern vibe.

After many wars and devastating earthquakes most of the city has been rebuilt numerous times, but some old monuments still exist. The Cathedral Sé is based on numerous predecessors going back to the Goths. A peculiar and slightly gruesome place is the baroque church Nossa Senhora do Carmo ith its side-chapel Capela dos Ossos. Here are the bones of long dead monks set into the walls themselves, giving the chapel a grim atmosphere. To cheer yourself up, head to the next bakery and try the local sweets based on figs and almonds.
