The little river Limmat divides the city in two equal halves before it flows into Lake Zurich. You can get lost walking through the network of little alleys between old houses from the 14th and 15th centuries.
Zurich, a city full of history
The Romanic style Cathedral is on the right side of the river, as is the Renaissance style Rathaus, the town hall. On the left side of the river you find the Frauenmünsterkirche, which has glass windows created by the famous artist Marc Chagall. On a little elevation is the Lindenhof, from here you have a great view of the city. The Altstadt, the historic city center, is encircled by quarters that were built in the 18th and 19th century. Most of the banks that made Zurich one of the major financial centers of the world can be found in this area. The world famous chocolate maker Sprüngli has its headquarter here, too. Situated behind the train station is the Swiss National Museum, another highlight of Zurich. Take a ride with the hundred-year-old Polybahn to get a great view over Zurich. It starts on the Central, a big square opposite the train station, and within two minutes takes you up to the Polyterrasse, where the University of Zurich is situated.

The Alps are a defining feature of Zurich, all the possibilities that are associated with mountains are here for you to enjoy. Make a day trip in the area and see the Rheinfall in Schaffhausen, near the German border. Here the river Rhine roars down in a majestic waterfall. Also worth a trip are the Höllgrotten (Hell’s Caves) or the medieval Palace of Rapperswil. Zurich also has an active nightlife, so if you feel like a good night out, you will find your party in one of the 500 bars and clubs of Zurich.
