Flying from London to Venice: tips and information for your trip
Come to Venice and enjoy the swift and comfortable flight. Once the city of Venice was the center of an empire of trade in the Adriatic Sea and the eastern Mediterranean. Venice had trade connections to goods from as far away as India and China, bringing spices and silk to Western Europe. The stories of Marco Polo, a Venetian trader, still tell the tale of these times. During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance Venice was probably the richest city on earth.
Venice on foot and by boat
As was the custom in Renaissance times, the rich merchants and the city council were builders of fine private and public buildings. The famous St Mark's Basilica was built around the remains of Mark the Evangelist’s body that Venetian traders smuggled out of Alexandria, Egypt, in 828. The Venetians then started to decorate their church with the fruits of trade and the loot of the plundering of Constantinople in the fourth crusade 1204. On the Piazza di San Marco in front of the Basilica and the Bell Tower you are more or less in the touristic focal point of Venice, so this is a good start to explore the fascinating city. Start walking along the fabled canals like the Canale Grande, go over the famous Rialto Bridge, and see the masterworks of Tintoretto in the Scuola Grande di San Rocco. A ride in one of the black gondolas, which were designed especially for the narrow waterways of Venice, is a must-do for every tourist in Venice. It is also a very authentic way to experience the particular vibrations of Venice.
Arts and crafts from Venice
The Doge’s Palace with the fabled Bridge of Sighs and The Leads, a prison in the palace from which Giacomo Casanova famously escaped, is another point on the must-see list. 117 Doges since 697 were resident here and each one contributed to the palace. Visit the Arsenal, the first assembly line in history. The highly skilled shipwrights had developed a system to build 100 ships in two weeks, the whole area used to be top secret. The fast Venetian galleys were at the heart of the trading success and kept the pirates of the Croatian coast at bay. Like every visitor you have to find a perfect Venetian gift as a souvenir or for your loved ones. Visit the famous glassmakers on the Murano island and watch them forming glass into dazzling colorful sculptures and tableware. Another very Venetian souvenir is a baroque mask that is usually worn during the colorful Venetian Carnival. The wine from the surrounding vineyards of the Veneto area are another treat to bring home from your holidays in Venice. Enjoy it and remember the great city in the lagoon when you are back in London.
