Today it is the capital of the Savoy province, but it once was the capital of all of Italy and for centuries the residence of the mighty Dukes of Savoy. The location at the foot of the Alps (the name of the region, Piedmont, means “feet of the mountain”) with the Po River as water supply and transportation highway was central to the prosperity of the city. The Celtic tribe of the Taurini may have been the eponym of Turin, because the name survived in the Roman name of the colony Augusta Taurinorum.

The Roman city is still part of Turin, the typical street grid was kept for the newer parts of the city. You can still see Porta Palatina, an impressive city gate from the Roman city wall.
