Flying from London to Turin: tips and information for your trip
Enjoy your flight to Turin from London and find out about the third biggest city in Italy, where centuries of art, culture and architecture are waiting to be discovered. Today it is the capital of the Savoy province, but it once was the capital of all of Italy and for centuries the residence of the mighty Dukes of Savoy. The location at the foot of the Alps (the name of the region, Piedmont, means “feet of the mountain”) with the Po River as water supply and transportation highway was central to the prosperity of the city. The Celtic tribe of the Taurini may have been the eponym of Turin, because the name survived in the Roman name of the colony Augusta Taurinorum.
Turin, city of palaces
The Roman city is still part of Turin, the typical street grid was kept for the newer parts of the city. You can still see Porta Palatina, an impressive city gate from the Roman city wall. Behind this is the old quarter Quadrilatero Romano, which is currently rediscovered by young creative students and professionals and is the place to go for a great night out. The most famous landmark of Turin is the Mole Antonelliana, which towers high above the city. It was originally planned as a synagogue, but ended up being the Museum of Italian Movie. The whole splendour of the former Duchy’s capital unfolds on the Piazza Castello, where the Palazzo Reale, the Kings Palace, the Palazzo Madama and the Palazzo Carignano are trying to outdo each other in beauty and elegance.
Enjoying Turin
The Shroud of Turin in the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in the city centre is famous worldwide, the linen shroud with an imprinted face of a man who is believed to be Jesus himself. Millions of devout Christians come here every year. Enjoy the beauty of the Piazza San Carlo, which like the rest of the city reminds the travellers more of Paris than Rome. Turin is also the centre of Italian cars, and for fans of Italian car design the Museo Nazionale dell’Automobile is a must-see museum. The specialties of the area are famous all over Italy and the world: Vitello tonnato, veal with a creamy tuna sauce, or Agnolotti, ravioli filled with beef and dipped in butter and sage, are just two of many local delights. The wine of the area, Barolo and Barbaresco, is said to be the best wine in Italy. Enjoy your time in Turin and bring some wine back to London on your return flight.
