Flying from London to Prague: tips and information for your trip
Enjoy your swift flight to Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. To many, especially the actual inhabitants, Prague is the most beautiful city in the world. Its nickname “The Golden City” goes back to the times when Emperor Karl IV (1316-1378), himself born in Prague, invented this name for his hometown because of the many golden church towers. He added a couple of golden roofs to that, and many more incredible buildings were added throughout the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The city developed its amazing skyline of a Thousand Spires and gold-covered towers in these early centuries and still has them.
Visiting St. Vitus
The most famous landmark of Prague is the Charles Bridge between the Old Town and the Lesser Town with the impressive gate towers at each end. In the 17th century the fine statues that line the bridge were added. The locals believe that touching the statue of the holy Nepomuk is supposed bring good luck. He was the vicar of St. Vitus Cathedral, the biggest church in the Czech Republic and a must-see landmark of Prague. Emperors, Kings and Queens were laid to rest in the crypt of St. Vitus. On your way through the city you will see the Old Town Hall with its famous Astronomical Clock from the 15th century. Prague Castle, the biggest medieval castle complex in Europe, is still the official seat of government.
Bohemian party nights
The Palace Gardens descend over several terraces under the castle down to the river. You will find not only beautiful flowers, but also herb gardens for cooking and medicine. Visit the old Jewish cemetery and museum where you can find out about the legend of the Golem, which once was circulating in Prague’s Jewish community. If you came here for nights of party and dancing in the numerous pubs and clubs of the city, the best preparation is a good meal of the hearty Bohemian cuisine. It is very heavy on meat, dumplings and gravy and is best enjoyed together with the world-famous beer from the towns of Budweis and Pilsen. To help the digestion along, have the classic Becherovka, the Czech cordial that is seen here as a natural treasure. Have fun in Prague, but don’t miss your flight back home to London!
