Flying from London to Dubrovnik: tips and information for your trip
Your flight to Dubrovnik from London brings you to the city that is known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic”. Beautiful beaches, constant sunshine, a glistening blue sea and a city that is part of the UNESCO world heritage, Dubrovnik has everything. George Bernhard Shaw wrote in 1929: "Those who seek paradise on Earth should come to Dubrovnik”. Nearly a hundred years later, he may still be right.
Standing in Kings Landing
The various sights of Dubrovnik are used as background for the city of Kings Landing in the famous fantasy epic “Game of Thrones”. Millions of fans of the show started to show up, on top of the many tourists that come here just because it is beautiful. Special guided tours to all the places and sights used in “Game of Thrones” are sometimes booked out well in advance. At least as interesting as the fantasy story is the actual history of Dubrovnik. For centuries it was called Ragusa and was a free republic, a city state and ruler of the Mediterranean trade routes. To defend this happy state against intruders, the city was well fortified against attackers. The city wall with its 16 watchtowers is still complete. You can have a walk on the Wall and surround the Old Town of Dubrovnik, starting at the Inner Pile Gate. You look down on the most famous street in Dubrovnik, the Stradun, a wide lane in white limestone that cuts the old town in two halves. Along the street is the Big Fountain of Onofrio and St. Saviour Church, the Rector's Palace, the Sponza Palace and the Franciscan Monastery from the 14th century.
Adriatic at its best: Beaches, mountains and islands
Long days on the beach are no problem around here, numerous sand and gravel beaches are in walking distance of the Old Town. Many more beaches including a nudist area, a salt lake and a botanical garden featuring plants from Australia and America are on the island of Lokrum, situated in front of Dubrovnik. Take a funicular to get on the 400 m high mountain Srd. From up there you are rewarded with a breathtaking view over the sea, the city and the islands. Try the specialties of Dubrovnik like Almatinski Pršut, a lightly smoked ham, or Brodet od riba, a fish stew, in one of the many traditional restaurants. Make a tour through the local wineries and bring some of the best wines of Croatia home as a souvenir for the taste buds. Enjoy your holidays in Dubrovnik, but don’t forget to catch your flight back home to London!
