Flying from London to Bangkok: tips and information for your trip

Your comfortable flight to Bangkok from London will bring into a very different climate zone. Hot and humid, with monsoon rains from May to October, the difference to London couldn’t be more stark. Yet the capital of Thailand on the River Chao Phraya has something in common with London. It has been the seat of the Royal Family since Rama I, founder of the current dynasty, made Bangkok his hometown.

        Channelling the energy

To get around in the new Royal residence, a system of channels was constructed. These “Khlongs” are a great way to get through the city by Express Boat and avoid the notorious traffic. You can even go to a market without getting off a boat; the “floating markets” of Bangkok are a famous tourist attraction. The most famous landmark of Bangkok is the Grand Palace, the former Royal residence. The vivid decoration and lots of gold dazzle the visitors. Inside the Palace is the most sacred site of Thailand, the Wat Phra Khaeo, with the Emerald Buddha inside. More than 400 Buddhist temples are in Bangkok, some of them are gigantic. Wat Pho, the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, houses a 46 meter long Buddha lying on his side. From here you can see the Wat Arun on the other side of the River, the Temple of Dawn, with its unusual high spire. Wat Saket, the Temple of the Golden Mount, is on top of the only hill in Bangkok and is therefore visible from far away.

Eat, drink and party in Bangkok

See Vimanmek Mansion, the largest house made entirely of teak wood in the world. Visit Chinatown and experience the hustle and bustle of Sampaeng Lane. If all the exploration makes you hungry, you will find great food on every corner. Stalls and food wagons are ubiquitous, each with its own specialties. In food courts, you get a sample of these stalls all in one place. The Thai cure for a small hunger is kui tiao nam, soup with noodles and meat like pork, chicken or duck. For the daring gourmet there is the extremely spicy gaeng kiau wan gai, green curry with eggplant and chicken. Bangkok is also famous for its sky bars on top of the high-rise structures. Enjoying your evening cocktail 200 meters above the bustling city is a very good start into the intense nightlife of Bangkok. The Khaosan Quarter with the backpacker meeting point Khaosan Road, the Sukhumvit quarter or the Royal City Avenue, RCA in short, are the places to go for a great night in Bangkok. Don’t miss your flight back to London!
