Malaga has not only a perfect climate, but also a beautiful Mediterranean coastal landscape and a natural harbour. That must have already been obvious to the Phoenicians who founded the city in 800 B.C., making Malaga even older than Rome. Today’s city has its charming beauty from the Moors, who integrated Malaga into the Caliphate of Granada for nearly 800 years. They left behind Malaga’s most famous monument, the mighty castle Alcazaba. It functioned as a palace as well as a fortress, so the rulers lived in elegant architecture, surrounded by beautiful gardens which had an advanced irrigation system. Later the Alcazaba was connected to a second fortress further up the mountain by a walled walkway, the Castillo de Gibralfaro. At the feet of the castle complex is the ruin of a Roman amphitheatre, which is also worth a visit.
Malaga – Arts and culture, golfing and the beach
Malaga’s most famous son is without a doubt the famous artist Pablo Picasso (even though the actor Antonio Banderas is a close second). The city has honoured him with a beautiful museum, giving a great insight into his life and his art. His house of birth is also a magnet for the art-loving tourists. For these there is also the Museo Carmen Thyssen, concentrating on 19th century art. If you enjoy the Flamenco, the traditional Andalusian music and dance, the Museo de Arte Flamenco will give you new insights into this culture. After so much sightseeing and art appreciation reward yourself with a lazy day on one of the endless beaches in and around Malaga. Or do you fancy a round of golf? There are so many golf courses around Malaga that it is sometimes referred to as the “Costa del Golf”.
