The Art of Flying: Simplicity and Precision

Creative people travel differently. Every journey can become a creative experience – if the setting is right. We accompanied French sculptor Antoine Dufilho on his flight in the Lufthansa Allegris Business Class. The result is a four-part video series that takes you along on his journey, including his very own travel hacks for a pleasant and inspiring flight experience

French sculptor Antoine Dufilho loves speed. At least, that’s what his body of work suggests: it includes sculptures of sleek sports cars, fast sailing boats, and motorboats, as well as aircraft such as the now-retired supersonic Concorde. However, when he sat in the Lufthansa Allegris Business Class Suite on his trip to Tokyo, he found peace, clarity, and a place to slow down – along with an unobstructed view through his window, full of inspiration.

The Perfect Seat – in a Place That Feels Like Home

Although Dufilho also works with sketches, many of his works take shape in his mind. Crucial to this is an environment that fosters concentration: peace and quiet, a clearly designed space, and the ability to retreat. For Dufilho, these are the foundations for developing and refining ideas. In the Lufthansa Allegris Business Class Suite, he finds exactly these conditions. The functionality of his Single Suite supports his creative process because the ergonomic seat adapts to Dufilho’s varying needs: working upright, leaning back, or fully relaxing. For the artist, however, comfort is also about the space itself: a sense of spaciousness and the freedom to move without feeling confined. A place that feels a little like a home above the clouds, where one can work comfortably and creatively.

Dufilho’s artistic techniques involve casting and welding; his works follow the principle of construction. They take shape through the layering of forms. The interplay of density and empty space creates a visual dynamic that perfectly complements his subjects: fast cars, boats, and airplanes. Another key element is light and its reflections, which make Dufilho’s static sculptures appear full of energy and movement.

Light That Moves – and Forms Everywhere That Inspire

Dufilho sees the forms that play such a major role in his work everywhere – even while travelling. Whether it’s the croissant for breakfast or the sleep mask. He was also impressed by the appearance of the Lufthansa Allegris cabin: the combination of different surfaces and precise craftsmanship aligns with Dufilho’s own design standards. For him, quality emerges precisely where materials are harmonised and their properties put to meaningful use. His Lufthansa Allegris Business Class Suite is such a space – one that is not only functional, but also conveys a clear design philosophy.

This transforms the flight itself for the sculptor: for Dufilho, travel becomes time for concentration, the Suite a space where ideas can be organized, and the journey itself becomes part of the creative process.

Travel Hacks – What Matters to Artist Antoine Dufilho While on the Go

  1. Understanding space as freedom: “When I travel, it’s important for me not to feel confined. I need space to move freely and let my thoughts flow. On my Lufthansa flight, I had exactly that feeling – enough space to think creatively and at the same time find peace, so that I arrived at my destination well-rested.”
  2. Lighting for every situation: “To stay relaxed during flights, I love dim lighting. However, I need it a bit brighter for working. What I liked about Lufthansa Allegris was that I could adjust the brightness – allowing me to be productive as well as to rest.”
  3. Making the most of the seat’s flexibility: “For me, it’s important to be able to adjust my seating position whenever I want – depending on whether I’m working or resting. In my Business Class Suite, I was able to find exactly that balance: working upright and later relaxing completely while lying down.”
