Picture Perfect Bogotá: "Chaotic, but Very Lively and Deeply Satisfying."
Fresh fruit all year round, colorful facades, and street art with strong messages – Bogotá has a lot to offer. Photographer Victoria Holguín captured it all on a stroll through her home city for Lufthansa Insights
Plaza de Bolívar: The Mirror of Bogotá
The Plaza de Bolívar is much more than just a symbol of the city; the square, which features the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, is the beating heart of the Colombian capital. Everything comes together here: tourists admiring the colonial buildings, religious celebrations seeking the transcendent, and demonstrations demanding the future. I see the Plaza de Bolívar as a mirror in which Bogotá constantly reflects on itself and redefines itself. It reminds me that a place is valuable not only for what it is, but also for all the people and voices it brings together.
The Center: Everything at Once
Walking through the center, you will come across a microcosm of the city. In just 80 meters, you will see an improvised bookstore, a stall with religious iconography, and local textiles, as well as the rhythm of salsa dancers. Bogotá offers everything at once – and requires you to find your own rhythm amid the hustle and bustle.
The Paloquemao Market: Natural Luxury
The Paloquemao Market is a testament to the abundance of nature in Colombia. Chontaduro (the fruit of the peach palm), gulupa (passion fruit), and feijoa (guava) are examples of the fruits that can be found there. The variety of fruits that we can enjoy year-round demonstrates Mother Earth's generosity. The market also reminds me that nature's simplest gifts are often the greatest luxuries.
Colorful Facades: Beautiful Chaos
Travelers arriving in Bogotá first see a lot of brick in a dominant ochre-orange hue. The closer you get to the center, the more color you will see adorning the facades of colonial and republican buildings. It's chaotic, but very lively and deeply satisfying.
Carrera Séptima: Play Chess and Pause for Thought
On the busy Carrera Séptima, between the stores and pedestrians, there are chess boards. Wherever you are, chess is a universal language that invites you to pause for a moment. Amid the hustle and bustle, the game is a reminder that there is always room for a quiet, intellectual exchange with a stranger in the constant chaos of everyday life.
Torres del Parque: Conversation With the Sky
Bogotá and the sky above are in constant dialogue. One moment, you wake up in the morning to a bright blue sky, and a few hours later, it is pouring with rain. With their curved masonry, the iconic Torres del Parque by Rogelio Salmona are the perfect canvas for this ever-changing interplay. The architecture seems to speak to the intense azure or the melancholy gray of the sky. Bogotá is a city that teaches you to appreciate constant change.
La Candelaria: Mural Painting That Makes a Difference
The La Candelaria district is an open-air gallery. Here, mural painting is an action, not just a visual embellishment. Each piece of writing has a political, philosophical, or social dimension that encourages reflection on Colombia's past and present. The graffiti in Bogotá is not just intended to be decorative, but to make a difference – or to entertain.
