What are you wearing on Mallorca right now?

The latest fashion trends  on Mallorca – balearic chic, explained by trend analyst and fashion director Julian Daynov

Mallorca is no longer just the package tour destination that many of us remember from the past. Instead, the island attracts people from all over the world, all year round. There are now more direct flights from major cities such as New York, and with the advent of mobile working, more and more city dwellers are moving to Mallorca. This also changes the fashion requirements on the island. Sandals and tennis socks are long gone – the many new and exclusive beach bars, clubs, and restaurants demand more extravagant looks.

So, what are the must-have items to pack for your next trip to Mallorca, or to buy while you’re there? Breezy fabrics and silhouettes dominate at the moment – silky tops, satin dresses, caftans, summery knitwear, chiffon, and soft linen. Bast bags are very popular right now and are available in many different shapes and sizes, even from high fashion labels. What's more, no island look this summer is complete without colorful pink, light blue, yellow, or orange sunglasses and safari hats.

The beach-to-dinner look for women, pairing a bikini with a quality scarf and high heels for the evening, is still going strong. Men's fashion is a little less extravagant this summer, but still bold. Must-haves include brightly colored shirts, caftans, baggy pants, and tank tops.

For those who prefer a more traditional look, classic sand tones are back in vogue, while crocheted dresses are making a comeback.

Here are some of my favorite places in Mallorca to show off these looks:

The fine dining restaurant Fera, where Japanese and Mediterranean dishes are arranged on plates like works of art.

Patiki Beach in Sóller, with perfect views of the mountains and the sea, conjures up delicacies from whatever is in season on the island.

The Hotel Can Ferrereta, located in a 17th century building in Santanyí, is very close to the most beautiful beaches on the island. This is where I like to relax by the pool and drink mocktails.

For shopping I recommend:

Corner in the heart of Palma sells the latest high-end designer goods.

A nice selection of vintage sunglasses and designer bags can be found at the nearby Red Square Gallery. Mediterranean home accessories are sold at Rialto Living – a Palma institution.
