Be Picky Charlotte: Selected Tips from Insiders
Admiring Southern mansions from a stand-up paddleboard – this unique experience awaits at Lake Norman, just outside Charlotte. A hidden gem recommended by flight attendant Fabian Smolka
On hot days, I love escaping the city. In Charlotte, that means grabbing my swimwear and heading out to Lake Norman with some of my colleagues. The largest man-made lake in North Carolina is only a 30-minute drive from downtown and boasts over 500 miles of shoreline. We usually go to the southern end of the lake, which is closest to the city and easily reachable by bus. There, we rent kayaks or stand-up paddleboards from one of the many rental spots and glide out onto the water. One of my favorite things to do is explore the lake's many inlets, where elegant Southern-style mansions line the shore. Or we go for a hike along the water – for example, in Ramsey Creek Park. A bit farther north, in Mooresville, there's even a wakeboarding school.

Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra once graced the stage of the historic Carolina Theatre, which opened in 1927. Sadly, the once grand movie and concert house was forced to close in the late 1970s due to declining attendance. But in March 2025 – nearly 50 years later – it reopened, restored to its former glory. Yoga sessions, drive-in movies, live concerts, and DJ sets: some of Charlotte's best open-air events take place at The Music Yard in the city's south. The venue regularly hosts album release parties by international acts, flea markets, and the famous roller disco from Charlotte Free Skate.
North Carolina's first art museum has been located in Charlotte since 1936 – and today it spans two locations: the Mint Museum Randolph and the Mint Museum Uptown. Housed in a historic building surrounded by a park with fountains, the Randolph location highlights, among other things, the traditions of Indigenous tribes from the U.S. The Uptown branch, part of the Levine Center for the Arts, showcases an impressive collection of international contemporary art.
