A Perfect Day: Helsinki in One Day
Lufthansa Owned Media Marketing Manager Stefanie Sauer loves traveling in Northern Europe. Helsinki has also inspired her – with creativity, Finnish design, and delicious food
9 AM: Breakfast at Café Regatta
In Helsinki, the sea is never far away. So my day in the Finnish capital starts by the water at Café Regatta. From the outside, it looks like a typical Nordic vacation cottage with red wooden walls and white shutters. Inside, it looks like a quaint harbor pub, with lots of maritime bric-a-brac. I treat myself to something sweet for breakfast: a deliciously sticky, warm cinnamon bun with a cup of steaming hot chocolate.
11 AM: Discover the Helsinki Architecture and Design Museum
It's a 30-minute tram or bus ride south to the Architecture and Design Museum. Swedish and Danish design is celebrated internationally, but Finland has also produced timeless icons that can be admired in this imposing brick building. The Fiskars scissors with the orange ears, for example, or the futuristic, world-famous Ball Chair. The internally upholstered hemisphere made of fiberglass on a short base was created by Finnish designer Eero Aarnio in the 1960s. Incidentally, the exhibition "Escape to Moominvalley" is taking place there until September 27, 2026, because 80 years ago the writer Tove Jansson invented the Moomins, the famous Finnish trolls.
12 PM: Shopping and Strolling Through the Design District
Helsinki's creative heart beats right next to the museum: the Design District. Around 200 boutiques, studios, and workshops are lined up here. Anyone who loves Scandinavian fashion, accessories, or ceramics will find what they are looking for here. And if you have more time, you can even book workshops in pottery, jewelry design, or leatherworking and make your own souvenir. Speaking of souvenirs, the stores of the Marimekko label, known for their floral prints on everyday objects and clothing (I recently bought a hat there), are particularly popular; the Moomin store, on the other hand, brings back childhood memories of the friendly Finnish trolls. If you still haven't had enough of shopping, visit the Stockmann department store for cool fashion from local designers.

1:30 PM: Lunch in the Old Market Hall
Just a short walk and I'm standing in front of the Old Market Hall at the harbor. The historic wooden stalls sell wonderfully fresh produce, from fish and meat to fruit and vegetables, and some of the stalls also offer delicious cooking and baking. A culinary must for many is creamy salmon soup, a Finnish classic.
In summer, boat trips through the archipelago depart from the harbor. Many of the picturesque islands can be reached in just 20 minutes by ferry.
3 PM: Helsinki's Rock Church
Back north to Töölö, where I had breakfast. This is home to one of the city's most fascinating buildings: Temppeliaukio Church. You enter through a brutalist-looking entrance and suddenly find yourself standing in a vault carved directly into the granite rock. Light filters through the 180 windows of the dome, the center of which is made of copper. It is not only the architecture that impresses here, but also the acoustics. This is why concerts are regularly held – mostly classical music, but sometimes you can also listen to rock and metal in the rock church.
5 PM: Oodi Central Library
Helsinki's central library wasn't on my plan at all. Luckily, a friend convinced me, because the Oodi is really exciting: cool modern architecture, a nice café, and books in every imaginable language. The visit showed me that the Finns are already living in the future, as there are fully equipped photo studios, sound recording rooms, sewing workshops, and 3D printers. Everything can easily be used for creative projects.
7 PM: Dinner at Kappeli
I round off the day with a relaxed dinner. My favorite: the Kappeli restaurant in Esplanadi Park. In a beautiful art nouveau glass building, the menu features international cuisine with a Finnish twist and typical regional ingredients. By the way, if you come here in the afternoon, try the gingerbread tartlet with an iced banana latte.

A Day in Helsinki – More Tips From the Lufthansa Editorial Team
- Stroll around the Hakaniemi Market Hall: if you want to experience another authentic side of the city besides the Old Market Hall, take the tram or metro to Hakaniemi and visit the Hakaniemi Market Hall – two floors of fresh food, small restaurants, and typical Finnish market hustle and bustle.
- Evening in Kallio: extend your perfect day with a stroll through Kallio, Helsinki's trendy bohemian district. Around Hakaniemi Square, Vaasankatu, and Fleminginkatu you will find independent bars, cafés, and affordable restaurants – ideal for ending the day like the locals.
- Visit the quiet island of Vallisaari: if you fancy a quieter archipelago island, take the ferry from Kauppatori market square to Vallisaari. It operates from May to the end of September. In around 20 minutes you are on a natural island with former fortifications, signposted paths, and views of the archipelago – perfect for a half-day visit.
