Excess baggage

Flat rates apply to excess and special baggage. This also applies to sports baggage that exceeds the free baggage allowance.

In Economy and Premium Economy Class an item of baggage is considered to be excess baggage if it weighs more than 23 kg (up to a maximum of 32 kg) and/or is larger than 158 cm (the total of width X + height Y + depth Z up to a maximum of 292 cm).
In Business and First Class an item of baggage is considered to be excess baggage if its total dimensions are greater than 158 cm up to a maximum of 292 cm.
Booking and prices
You will be charged the flat rates for excess baggage if your checked baggage matches the permitted number of items but exceeds the permitted weight and/or dimensions, or if the number of checked items of baggage exceeds your allowance.
On certain routes, as an Economy Class passenger you benefit from reduced flat rates for the second item of checked baggage (up to 23 kg/up to 158 cm).
If you are travelling with another airline, please contact the operating airline directly for information about their excess baggage charges.
Baggage calculator
You can check your free baggage allowance in just a few steps with our baggage calculator – based on route, travel class and fare. There you’ll also find the prices and permitted maximum weight and dimensions for excess baggage.
Due to limited capacity and varying regulations at our partner airlines, we recommend making an early reservation for your excess baggage either
- at your travel agency
- or simply by calling the Service Centre yourself
Make sure you have attached your name and (mobile) telephone number to each item of baggage (on the inside and outside) before checking it in at the airport. Baggage tags and/or stickers for baggage to be checked in can be obtained from the check-in desk free of charge. You are also welcome to use your own baggage tags.
Please observe the baggage check-in deadlines for your travel class and airport.
As a general rule, the data we collect is used to perform the contract of carriage you have concluded with us. This includes both passenger and baggage data. We share data with the airlines and airports concerned to ensure the onward carriage of your baggage with other airlines and its prompt processing at the airport. In addition, we assist the German customs authorities in the fulfilment of their legal duties by allowing limited access to selected data.
