Know Before You Go: Catania
Located at the foot of Mount Etna, one thing immediately stands out in Catania: the city isn’t built from the yellowish stone typical of Sicily, but from black lava rock. A truly unique sight! With the following handy tips on getting around, dining, and sights, you can explore all of Catania and enjoy your stay
Getting from the Airport to the City
Catania-Fontanarossa Airport (CTA) is located just under five kilometers or three miles south of the city center. The most affordable connection is the Alibus, which runs to the city center for around €4 and departs approximately every 20 minutes. The ride takes about 20 minutes. Taxis cost up to €40, depending on traffic.
Public Transportation
Public transportation is mainly operated by buses from AMTS Catania. A single ticket costs about €1 and is valid for 90 minutes. There is also a small metro line, but it only covers certain areas of the city. Tickets are available at tobacco shops (“Tabacchi”) and kiosks.

Tipping
Tipping is not mandatory in Italy, but it is customary to leave a reasonable tip. Often, a “coperto” (cover charge) is already included on the bill, which partially covers the service. An additional tip of 5 to 10 percent is appreciated for good service.
Typical Opening Hours
In Catania, many shops open around 9 or 10 a.m. on weekdays and close around 9 p.m. Smaller shops – especially out of season – often take a longer lunch break between 1 and 4 p.m. Supermarkets and larger chains are generally open all day.
Useful Phrases
You can easily communicate with these short phrases:
“Quanto costa?” – How much is this?
“Dov’è... il bagno / una farmacia / un supermercato?” – Where is... the restroom / a pharmacy / a supermarket?
“Il conto, per favore.” – The check, please.
Fun Fact
Catania’s history is reflected in its cityscape. After the great earthquake of 1693, the city was almost entirely rebuilt using dark lava rock from Mount Etna. This contrast between somber volcanic rock and magnificent Baroque ornamentation is unique worldwide. Especially when the sun goes down, the light-colored limestone facades glow against the deep black of the lava rock.
