A Perfect Day: Rome in One Day
Spaghetti Cacio e Pepe and pistachio gelato are part of a perfect day in Rome for flight attendant Martin Koell – but beyond the culinary delights, he also has fabulous tips for exploring the Eternal City
8 AM: A Photo at the Trevi Fountain
A selfie at the famous Trevi Fountain is best taken early in the morning before your first espresso, when it’s still not too crowded. If you toss a coin into the water, legend has it that you’ll be granted a wish to return to Rome.
9 AM: A Short Walk to the Market
Afterwards, I like to stroll to the market at Campo de' Fiori, where flowers and local specialties are offered – and, of course, samples are encouraged! The walk from the Trevi Fountain takes about 20 minutes, passing by the Pantheon, the ancient temple turned church, along the way.
10 AM: Coffee at Campo de' Fiori
By now, it's time for the first espresso. I enjoy mine at one of the many cafés around Campo de' Fiori, soaking in the peaceful morning atmosphere before the surrounding streets fill up. I love watching people in Rome: older men in sunglasses zipping by on Vespas or well-dressed elderly ladies walking their dogs.
11 AM: A Two-Wheel Tour
Speaking of Vespas, you can take a sightseeing tour around Rome by scooter, seeing the Colosseum, St. Peter’s Basilica, and Piazza Venezia with local guides. You can either drive yourself or ride as a passenger on a two-person Vespa. It’s not only quintessentially Italian but also a great way to cover more ground if you’re short on time.

2 PM: Lunch in Trastevere
For lunch, I like to dine at Trattoria Da Enzo al 29 in the former working-class district of Trastevere. My recommendation: try classic Roman dishes like meatballs in tomato sauce or Spaghetti Cacio e Pepe with Pecorino cheese and pepper! The prices are fair, it’s not too touristy, you can sit outside, and the staff is very friendly and attentive. Often, they’ll offer a complimentary coffee after your meal – perfect!
3 PM: A Nutty Dessert
Now it’s time for gelato! L'Arena Del Gelato in the Borgo district is famous for its homemade pistachio gelato. It’s simply the best between the Vatican and Castel Sant’Angelo. If you prefer tiramisu for dessert, head to Mr. 100 Tiramisù, which offers an impressive 100 (!) varieties of this iconic Italian treat.
4 PM: International Atmosphere at St. Peter’s Square
I’ve been to Rome many times, but the park at Villa Borghese with its grand sculptures and fountains always impresses me. The breathtaking architecture of St. Peter's Basilica is equally inspiring. The energy on the square in front of the famous basilica is unique, with people from all over the world coming together. I love listening to the blend of international voices.

7 PM: Aperitivo and Dinner
In the evening, it’s back to Trastevere. In the many bars and cafés, locals meet after work for an aperitif, with snacks like breadsticks, olives, or focaccia. Later, there are plenty of restaurants in the area to choose from for dinner.

9 PM: Rooftop Bar with a View of Rome
One of the best places to end the day in Rome is the Oro Bistrot on the rooftop terrace of the NH Collection Roma Fori Imperiali Hotel. The view of the city from here is breathtaking. Be sure to make a reservation in advance!
About:
Martin Koell has been a flight attendant with Lufthansa since 2015. Rome is one of his favorite destinations because, as a native of South Tyrol, he speaks fluent Italian and feels right at home in the Eternal City. Whenever he travels, he jots down his favorite places in a notebook to later share with friends and colleagues.
