Sports baggage on Lufthansa flights

You can conveniently take your sports baggage with you on Lufthansa flights. You can find out here about what we offer and what you need to be aware of.
Make sure you have attached your name and (mobile) telephone number to each piece of baggage (on the inside and outside) before checking it in at the airport. Bag tags and/or stickers for baggage items to be checked in can be obtained free of charge at the check-in counter. You are also welcome to use your own bag tags.
Please note: the maximum length for sports baggage is 315 cm and the maximum weight is 32 kg. Baggage charges for your travel class and airport can be found here.
As a general rule, the data we collect is used to fulfil the contract of carriage you have taken out with us. It includes both passenger and baggage data. To ensure the onward transportation of your baggage with other airlines, as well as its timely processing at airports, we pass data on to the airlines and airports concerned. In addition, we support the German Customs authorities in the fulfilment of their legal duties by allowing limited access to selected data.
Large sports equipment is not counted as part of the free baggage allowance and so must always be paid for.
Our allocation for sports equipment is limited. We therefore recommend making a reservation for your desired item(s) of sports equipment as soon as possible at your travel agency or through the Lufthansa Service Centre. Registrations are only accepted until 24h prior to departure and our limited capacity for sports equipment may already be exhausted. Please give your booking code when making the reservation.
Please settle any flat rate payments that may arise directly at a Lufthansa Service counter at the airport. Sports baggage can be counted as your free baggage as long as the number of items and the weight do not exceed the free baggage allowance stipulated for your travel class. This does not, however, apply to the Economy Class Light fare.
Sports baggage that exceeds the free baggage allowance and the weight limit of the respective travel class, but does not exceed the maximum weight of 32 kg, will be charged in accordance with the flat rates for sports baggage. If your sports baggage is not listed in the Sports Baggage Rules, the transport of your baggage will be charged in accordance with the flat rates for excess baggage.
Items of sports baggage that weigh more than 32 kg and are longer than 315 cm will not be accepted as travel baggage. They can be sent as air freight.
For information about air freight originating from Germany, you can also contact Lufthansa Cargo in Germany.
Information on sending air cargo to and from other destinations is available from the respective local Lufthansa Cargo Sales Office.
