Payment options

You can easily book and securely pay for your flight at lufthansa.com. The methods of payment available and much more information can be found in the following sections.
Available everywhere and at any time. Pay for your lufthansa.com online booking conveniently and securely with your debit card.
What is a debit card?
Debit cards are linked to an account and, in most cases, are only offered in combination with a current account provided by a bank. A debit card number is 13 to 19 digits long and is printed on the front of the card along with the dates of the card’s validity. The debit card’s three-digit security number is usually on the back of the card, in or near the signature strip.
Note: bank cards or EC cards with a V-Pay or Maestro logo are often also designated as debit cards. These cards enable you to withdraw money from ATMs worldwide and to pay in shops without using cash either by entering your PIN or providing your signature. However, not all of these cards have an online payment function. The bank that issued your card will certainly be able to give you more information in this regard.
Difference compared to credit cards: in contrast to credit cards, when you make a cashless payment with a debit card, the relevant amount will be debited from your linked current account within a few days. Payments are therefore only possible if you have sufficient funds in your account. With a credit card, on the other hand, amounts are debited only at certain intervals, usually once a month.
You can pay with the following debit cards at lufthansa.com:
Corporate debit cards:
- MasterCard Debit
- Visa Debit
- Visa Electron
What do I need to do to pay with a debit card at lufthansa.com?
If you would like to pay by international debit card Visa Debit/Visa Electron or Mastercard Debit, you can use the designated "Debit-/Credit Cards" field. You will be prompted to enter the card number, expiry date and security code. The booking will then be continued.

What is 3D Secure, and how can I use it for my card?
The security standard for online purchases with a credit or debit card is called 3D Secure in the professional jargon. It is called "MasterCard Identity Check" at Mastercard, Visa Secure at Visa, and "Safekey" at American Express, "J/Secure" at JCB and "ProtectBuy" at Diners and Discover.
Lufthansa is following the new legal requirements and is adapting all own payment processes according to the Strong Customer Authentication. Strong Customer Authentication is a requirement of the second EU Payment Services Directive (PSDII) on payment service providers within the European Economic Area (EEA) and/or credit and debit cards which are issued within the EEA. Online payment transactions have to be confirmed by at least two of the following three elements:
With your credit card, paying for your online booking is especially convenient.
Which credit cards can be used for online booking?
You can pay with the following credit cards:
- VISA Card
- Mastercard
- American Express
- Diners Club/Discover
- JCB Card
- AirPlus Company Account/UATP
What do I have to do to pay with a credit card on lufthansa.com?
Simply save your credit card number once to your user profile, or, if you have not created a profile, provide the information when you make the booking.
Please note that an additional charge may be levied on certain methods of payment.

The requirement of Payment Services Directive increases the security of electronic payments.
Your transactions are protected e.g. by a personal password or by a transaction number (mTAN) sent to your mobile phone via SMS (identification procedures may vary from bank to bank). This allows you to make online purchases with peace of mind. You might also be asked to answer a security question. The security question and your answer to it have been set in the process of registering the card with your bank. The security question is often queried in a separate pop-up. For this reason, please make sure to disable the pop-up blocker in your browser.
How does the 3D Secure work?
If 3D Secure authentication is required for your online transaction, you will see an input window of your bank after you have entered your card details, prompting you to enter your password, mTAN and/or a security question belonging to the card. If you enter all details correctly, the bank will confirm that you are the legitimate cardholder, and the payment process can be continued.
The first time you make a payment in the 3D Secure system, you will be prompted to register for 3D Secure after entering your credit or debit card information. A dialogue box in which you can complete the registration will open directly from the bank that issued your card.
Additional information on the 3D Secure can be found on your bank’s homepage.
