On the Scene Vancouver: Locals Talk About Current Trends in Their City
Christopher Vanderkooy, lead guitarist of the indie pop band Peach Pit, knows which food trend is currently hot in his hometown: donuts in every conceivable variation
Ever since the once great donut dynasty Tim Horton's was sold to an American company, the people of Vancouver have been developing their very own donut identity. Currently, small bakeries are opening on every street corner, all wanting to claim the title of "The Great Canadian Donut".
At Lee's Donuts, a classic at the Granville Island Public Market, you can get traditional donuts to perfection, which are still made by hand. They are considered the best donuts in Vancouver. And the recipe? An original from 1979, which the founders Alan and Betty-Ann Lee came up with themselves. Lucky's Doughnuts scores with unusual and unique flavors such as the Vietnamese Coffee Bismarck or Fruits 'n' Florals Old Fashioned.
However, for me the ultimate donut shop and the best donut in Vancouver is Cream Pony in North Vancouver. Their chocolate dip donut reminds me of Tim Horton's in its heyday, only better. Everything is just right here, the soft dough, the creamy, sweet filling - the crowning glory in donut form. And don't get me started on the apple fritter - it's so good! I pop into one of these stores at least once a week to supply the band and myself with donuts. One thing is certain: Vancouver's donut culture is in full bloom and ripe for trying.
