Ever flown to Cologne?
Book your Lufthansa flight to Cologne, the famous city on the banks of the river Rhine. Discover a rich history dating back to Roman times and a unique urban culture that has developed in over two thousand years of uninterrupted settlement.
From arts and culture to a real wild carnivalThe Romans founded Cologne as „Oppidum Ubiorum“ and renamed it to „Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium“ in 50 b. C.. If you are interested in the history of the Romans along the river Rhine there is an excellent museum right next to the main station, the Roman-Germanic Museum. On the other side is the must-see attraction of cologne that is very hard to ignore due to its sheer size: the mighty Cologne Cathedral, „der Dom“, is one of the biggest gothic cathedrals of Europe. The construction started in 1248, but until completion in 1880 the church spent centuries as an uncompleted ruin. But the cathedral is only one of many churches in Cologne, some of them are much older and some are even built on the foundations of Roman heathen temples.
Cologne is also a big attraction for art aficionados. The yearly Art Cologne is the biggest show for contemporary art, and the world famous collections of Museum Ludwig, Wallraff-Richartz-Museum, Käthe-Kollwitz-Museum or Kölnischer Kunstverein are big names in the art world. Though by far the most visitors come for the Carnival of Cologne, the biggest street carnival in Germany. From „Women’s Carnival“ on Thursday to „Fat Tuesday“, the city is in constant party mode with the great parade of floats and marching bands on “Rose Monday” as the highlight. Some say the wild party dates back to the Romans, who held a similar festival in the winter called Saturnalia. So have a couple of „Kölsch“, the local beer, and party with the costumed crowd until you have to catch your Lufthansa flight home.
