Your flight to Faro in Portugal’s beautiful south
Enjoy your comfortable Lufthansa flight to Faro in southern Portugal. Because Faro has the only airport of the area, most visitors are going directly from here to the many touristic centres of the Algarve, the southern coast of Portugal. It is their loss, because Faro has much to offer for the sightseeing tourist.
Faro between history and futureFaro was founded around 800 B.C. by the Phoenicians as an important colony in their Mediterranean shipping network. They were succeeded by Greeks, Romans, Goths and finally the Moors, who lived here when King Alfonso III of Portugal conquered Faro in 1249. Not many buildings have survived from the old times, but Faro still has its medieval city wall. It surrounds the historic city centre, the Vila Adentro, and the wall has three of its original gatehouses left. About 10.000 students of the University of Faro give a young and modern vibe to the city, so there is a certain contrast between the old heritage and the modern-day city life. If you have a different plan than lying on the same beach for seven days, Faro is certainly worth your time and appreciation.
What to do in and around FaroBecause of many wars and devastating earthquakes the city had to be rebuilt several times, yet some old monuments still exist. The Cathedral Sé is built on the foundations of several predecessors going back to the Goths. From the massive church tower with its bells you can have a beautiful view over the city and the nearby Largo de Sé. The baroque church Nossa Senhora do Carmo with its side-chapel Capela dos Ossos is one of the most famous sights in Faro. The bones and skulls of dead monks are set into the walls, which gives the chapel quite a gothic atmosphere. From the harbour you can take a boat and make a tour through the protected area and wildlife sanctuary Ria Formosa. The area consists of salt marshes that are hard to find in most parts of Europe. They are listed as an Important Bird Sight, especially migrating birds on their way to and from Africa like to rest in these untouched areas. Faro has a beach that is a short bus ride outside the city. If you take a boat to the three islands you will find pristine beaches with very few visitors, the least developed and most peaceful beaches on the Algarve. Enjoy Portugal’s Algarve Coast with your Lufthansa flight to Faro.
