Fly to Salzburg, the hidden gem of Austria
After Austria’s capital Vienna the beautiful town of Salzburg is the second biggest tourist magnet in the country. To most travellers coming here it is the music that lures them, especially the Salzburg Festival. For five weeks in the Summer the city is the centre of the world for lovers of classical music.
More Mozart! The Salzburg Festival was first held in 1920 and put the town firmly on the map of the world of music. It was, and is, held in honour of the city’s most famous son, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. You can still visit his house of birth in the Getreidegasse 9, where a little museum shows the development of little Wolfgang from wonder child to musical genius. During the Salzburg Festival you can hear renditions of his works from string trio to opera by the best musicians and singers in the world. In 1973 the famous conductor Herbert von Karajan established a second festival, the Salzburg Pentecost Festival. Most productions are repeated in the regular summer Festival, so this a great and less crowded preview show to the main event.
Discover the beauty of SalzburgSince 1996 the historic city center is on the UNESCO world cultural heritage list. A stroll through the back-alleys and little market places will give you a feel for the life people were leading during the baroque and rococo period. The city was ruled by the bishop, who had his residence on the fortress Hohensalzburg, one of the biggest castle complexes in Europe. In later times the bishops of Salzburg built magnificent palaces in the surrounding area of Salzburg. Even today the splendour of Schloss Freisaal, Schloss Mirabell, Schloss Hellbrunn, Schlosses Kleßheim and Schloss Leopoldskron is dazzling. The great cathedral matches the residences of the mighty bishops. All the luxury is paid for with the natural salt that is mined in the surrounding area called Salzkammergut. If you go to nearby Hallstatt, you will find salt mines operated for hundreds of years by early Celtic people, naming a whole historic period as the Hallstatt culture. Have fun in Salzburg and enjoy your comfortable Lufthansa flight!
