What Stockholm (STO) has to offer

Your flight from London to Stockholm

Welcome to Sweden’s capital Stockholm, a city built on 14 islands in the freshwater Lake Mälaren with the Baltic Sea in front. When the city started in the 13th century, it needed just one island, Stadsholmen, and this was a lot smaller than it is today. This historic core of Stockholm is today the famous Gamla stan, the Old Town. Here you can retrace the early development of Stockholm from trading post to capital of Sweden.

Water world made in Sweden

The perfect location for trade with the Baltic States, Russia and Finland made Stockholm a commercial success. The Hansesatic League (which also gave its name to Lufthansa, “Hanseatic League of the air) dominated Stockholm for 300 years. When Stockholm became the royal residence in the 16th century, it started to grow over the neighbouring islands Södermalm und Norrmalm. The growth continues to this day, Stockholm is the only city in Scandinavia with a million inhabitants. To get around the city, use the well-organised public transport. The underground stations are a landmark all by themselves; each one has a different design. You can also use all the boats and ferries. When it comes to ships, Sweden has a long history of shipbuilding. But the most famous was actually a victim of miscalculation: The Vasa. It sank after a mere 1300 meters in 1628, was found and restored in the 1960s and today has its own museum on the Djurgården peninsula. The opulent baroque decoration finds an echo in the royal palaces Gripsholm and Drottningholm, the “Versailles of Sweden”. Next to the Vasa museum is the new Viking museum with a reconstructed settlement from the 10th century.

Scandinavia at its best

A much bigger open-air museum is Skansen, where Swedish live since the 15th century is presented with original buildings, furniture and tools, sometimes a complete village is reconstructed here. From here, it is short walk to the amusement park Gröna Lund, where you can take a rollercoaster ride on the waterfront. Another recent attraction is the ABBA Museum, where memorabilia of the famous Swedish pop sensation are on display. Mingle with the locals on the flea- and food market in Södermalm, or climb the tower of the city hall, the Stadhuset, to get an unrivalled view over the city and the lake. Visit the young and bustling SoFo district and find little shops specialising in vintage clothing, design, jewellery, houseware or music. A cinnamon bun and a cup of coffee is the Stockholm way of enjoying the summer afternoon. Have a quiet walk in the royal gardens, the Kungsträdgarden, or explore the Stockholm archipelago with 30.000 little islands and rocks in the Baltic Sea, many of them with the typical little red houses on them. Enjoy your time in Stockholm, but don’t miss your flight back to London!
