A Perfect Day: Boston in One Day
Boston holds a special place in Gregor Werner’s heart. Why? The Lufthansa flight attendant will tell you here. He also shows us what his perfect day in Boston looks like: enjoying East Coast delicacies, strolling through idyllic parks, and admiring historic buildings in the unofficial capital of New England
9 AM: Breakfast at Boston Common
I’m always especially excited whenever I see Boston on my flight schedule. Why? My very first flight assignment with Lufthansa took me nonstop to this unique East Coast city, and that first destination always holds a special place in the hearts of all flight attendants.
To kick off my perfect day in Boston, I always grab a coffee and a croissant at Tatte Bakery. I especially like the location near Boston Common, where I can start my day at a leisurely pace and enjoy my light breakfast surrounded by greenery. Especially in late summer, when the leaves on the trees are slowly beginning to change color, I find it particularly charming to linger here for an hour or two and escape the hustle and bustle.
10 AM: Walk Along the Freedom Trail
From the park, the Massachusetts State House is impossible to miss, an impressive brick building with a striking golden dome and white columns. A grand structure fitting for its purpose, as it houses the government of Massachusetts. Visitors can explore the building on their own or join a tour – both are free of charge – to learn more about its architecture or the history of the sixth U.S. state.
Today, however, I prefer to take the Freedom Trail at Boston Common. This roughly four-kilometer-long path is marked by bricks set into the ground and connects 16 historically significant sites. I follow the trail toward the waterfront, letting myself amble along and enjoying the view of the numerous historic buildings. I am particularly taken with King’s Chapel, especially because of the intricately hand-carved Corinthian wooden columns inside.

12 PM: Enjoy a Typical East Coast Lunch at Quincy Market
Just before I arrive at the Waterfront, I stop by Quincy Market for a bite to eat. The market is located in a 19th-century neoclassical building. Here you’ll find market stalls offering all kinds of delicacies, as well as restaurants and bars. For me, it’s the perfect place to try some classics of East Coast cuisine: clam chowder, a creamy mussel soup, or a lobster roll, a soft brioche bun filled with succulent lobster meat.
1:30 PM: A Break at Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park
Now it’s time to head to the water – more specifically, to the beautiful Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park, which is right on the waterfront. Especially in the spring, when everything is in bloom, it’s a great spot to relax and take photos, for example in front of the statue of Christopher Columbus or under the vine-covered pergolas.

3 PM: Get a Taste of Student Life on the Harvard Campus
The best way to explore Boston is on foot, so here’s my tip: wear comfortable sneakers! I take the subway to the Harvard campus, though, which takes about 30 minutes. Once there, I’m impressed not only by the architectural style of this elite university, but above all by the spirit that reigns there: it’s truly unique!
There are many small shops and quaint bookstores all around the university campus that invite you to take a leisurely stroll. Of course, you’ll also find cafés on every corner where students can enjoy a quick break with a cup of coffee. My insider tip is Café Faro, tucked away on a side street, far from the tourist path. There, I immerse myself in the Harvard spirit, eavesdropping on students’ conversations and almost feeling as if I were studying at this impressive university myself.
Here’s another option: If you’re looking for a relaxing afternoon outing, your best bet is to rent a car and drive to Plymouth. No other city offers a better opportunity to explore the history of the United States. In 1620, the ship Mayflower docked here with settlers from England. The settlers established one of the first permanent settlements in America and went down in history as the “Pilgrim Fathers.” A replica of the Mayflower serves as a museum ship and welcomes visitors from March through October – an absolute must-see for history buffs!
7 PM: Enjoy a Pasta Feast in Little Italy
For dinner, I prefer to go to the North End neighborhood, better known as Little Italy. What’s on the menu there? Pasta, of course! My favorite spots for an excellent pasta dish are Giacomo’s and Mamma Maria.
9 PM: Boston’s Best Cannoli for Dessert
I decide to skip dessert at the restaurant because nothing rounds off a perfect day in Boston better than a Sicilian cannoli – a crispy, fried pastry roll filled with ricotta. Where can you find the best ones? That’s a point of contention among Bostonians. Some swear by Mike’s Pastry, while others insist that Modern Pastry is the only option. My advice: Try both and decide for yourself.

Out and About in Boston – More Tips from the Lufthansa Editorial Team
- Sunset with a view of the skyline: The Charles River Esplanade is a particularly beautiful spot for the early evening. The park stretches along the river and offers a wonderful view of the Boston skyline. It’s especially relaxing at sunset, when the light reflects off the water and joggers and students wind down for the day.
- Enjoy art at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum: If you have some time to spare in the afternoon, it’s worth taking a detour to visit the museum. Visitors are captivated by the diverse art collection featuring works from Europe, Asia, and the Americas as well as by the architecture. Housed in a building designed in the style of a Venetian palazzo, the museum features a courtyard oasis with plants, fountains, and sculptures that invite you to take a break.
- Jazz and cocktails at a historic club: Why not visit the historic Scullers Jazz Club late in the evening? For decades, international jazz musicians have performed here. Enjoy live music and close out the day with a drink in a relaxed atmosphere.
