Terms of use for Lufthansa Gift Cards

Lufthansa Gift Card are an offer from Deutsche Lufthansa Aktiengesellschaft, Venloer Straße 151-153, 50672 Köln, Germany (referred to below as ‘Lufthansa’). The Gift Card are vouchers that are offered on Lufthansa.com. These general terms and conditions of Lufthansa apply to contracts for the purchase of vouchers on the internet.

People who accept this offer (referred to below as ‘user’) have the option of using the value to book a flight at a later date as well as for selected additional services on Lufthansa.com.

These terms and conditions of use apply to the use of the voucher. In addition to these terms of use, the General Terms and Conditions of Carriage of Lufthansa shall apply at all times.

Gift Card can only be purchased at Lufthansa.com. Gift Card are not issued via ticket offices, ticket counters or travel agents.

By ordering a Gift Card, the user makes a binding offer to conclude a contract which requires acceptance by Lufthansa. Acceptance of the offer by Lufthansa is confirmed by means of a confirmation email to the customer to the email address specified in the course of the order process.

Gift Card may be paid for by any credit card accepted by Lufthansa. As soon as Lufthansa has received payment in full, a confirmation email is sent to the email address specified in the course of the order process. The email contains a PDF file including the voucher code.

Gift Card are issued in euros.

The customer has the right to cancel the Gift Card within 14 days without giving reasons. This period begins on receipt of the confirmation email, through which the contract came into effect. Sending notice of cancellation before the deadline shall suffice for compliance with the deadline. However, the right to cancel expires even before the end of the 14-day period as soon as the Gift Card has been redeemed, even if only partially.

Any benefits obtained must be returned when exercising the right to cancel. In the event of cancellation of the Gift Card, Lufthansa shall void the voucher code on the Gift Card and refund the value of the Gift Card.

Gift Card can only be redeemed for flight bookings made directly on Lufthansa.com. A Gift Card can only be redeemed directly at the time of booking and cannot be offset retroactively. Up to three Gift Card or vouchers can be redeemed in a single booking.

Unless otherwise stated on the Gift Card, the Gift Card is valid from the time of issue until the end of the year in which it has been issued and then for a further three years thereafter (e.g. issue date 21.8.2025 with validity until 31.12.2028).

The Gift Card must not be sold. The Gift Card is transferable to another person. The holder of the Gift Card therefore does not have to be the passenger of the ticket to be purchased.

If the Gift Card value exceeds the purchase price of the ticket, the remaining value of the voucher can be used for further purchases within the term of validity of the issued Gift Card.

If the amount of the Gift Card is not sufficient to purchase a new flight in full, the difference can be paid by credit card (Visa, Mastercard or American Express) during the flight booking process.

The Gift Card can only be used for booking flights with a Lufthansa flight number (e.g. LH123).

Once the Gift Card is used, its validity expires for the amount used.

If tickets paid for with a Gift Card are cancelled in accordance with the legal or fare conditions and a refund is applied for, the refund value is transferred back to the Gift Card.

Customers are advised to protect the Gift Card from access by third parties to prevent misuse. Because the Gift Card are not personalised, only knowledge of the voucher code is required to redeem the Gift Card. In particular, the previous holder is therefore able to continue to use the voucher code if a Gift Card is transferred.

The value of Gift Card cannot be refunded in cash as any other payment. This does not affect the provisions under section 4.

The liability of Lufthansa to compensate users is excluded, providing the claim is based on minor negligence. This does not apply in the event of a breach of duty which the contract must provide for in accordance with its meaning and purpose, or the fulfilment of which allows the proper performance of the contract and on compliance with which users may generally rely. If Lufthansa is liable in principle, the claim for compensation shall be limited to the typical contractual and foreseeable damages (value of the established service).

The limitations of liability do not apply in the event of injury to life, limb or health, in the case of gross negligence or wilful intent by employees, vicarious agents or legal representatives of Lufthansa, as well as in the case of legally stipulated liability irrespective of fault or any guarantees undertaken.

Lufthansa does not accept any liability for incorrect information provided in the course of registration or purchase of the voucher on Lufthansa.com for which Lufthansa is not responsible, such as typos, for example in email addresses. In particular, Lufthansa does not issue replacement vouchers.

Lufthansa shall not be liable for losses or damages to the customer that arise due a third party making bookings unlawfully by quoting the correct voucher code.

These terms and conditions of participation and all legal relationships between users and Lufthansa are governed by German law (excluding the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods and private international law) unless another national law is mandatory.

The Lufthansa Sponsored Travel Voucher is a travel voucher made available by Deutsche Lufthansa Aktiengesellschaft, Venloer Straße 151-153, 50672 Cologne, Germany (hereinafter referred to as “Lufthansa”).

The Lufthansa Sponsored Travel Voucher is made available free of charge by Lufthansa to selected end customers as part of marketing campaigns, prize draws or other promotional activities.

These Terms and Conditions of Use govern the use and redemption of the Lufthansa Sponsored Travel Voucher by the respective user. To the extent that the voucher is issued as part of a prize draw, the respective Terms and Conditions of Participation shall apply in addition. To the extent that the Terms and Conditions of Participation, the voucher itself or other conditions communicated in connection with the issuance of the voucher contain specific provisions, in particular regarding eligibility to participate, the prize, redemption, transferability or validity of the voucher, such specific provisions shall prevail over these Terms and Conditions of Use.

In addition to these Terms and Conditions of Use, Lufthansa’s General Conditions of Carriage and the fare conditions displayed during the booking process shall apply.

The Lufthansa Sponsored Travel Voucher shall be issued in the form of a voucher code.

The person who has lawfully obtained the voucher code shall be entitled to redeem it.

The voucher shall not be sold, but shall be made available free of charge by Lufthansa, in particular as a prize in connection with a prize draw or as part of a marketing campaign.

The voucher code shall be kept carefully by the user and protected against access by unauthorised third parties.

The participants or users shall bear sole responsibility for the accuracy and completeness of the data provided in connection with the issuance and use of the voucher, in particular the contact details and, where applicable, the booking reference (PNR).

The Lufthansa Sponsored Travel Voucher may be redeemed exclusively for bookings made via Lufthansa.com, unless otherwise or additionally provided in the respective Terms and Conditions of Participation, on the voucher or during the booking process.

The voucher may only be redeemed during the booking process and may not be applied retroactively.

The voucher shall be denominated in the currency determined at the time of its issuance. The voucher may only be redeemed for bookings made in the same currency.

To the extent that the respective Terms and Conditions of Participation or the voucher provide that redemption is possible exclusively for bookings in euros, redemption shall be possible only for bookings in euros.

Up to three vouchers may be redeemed per booking.

If the voucher value is insufficient to cover the full amount payable, the difference may be paid using a payment method accepted during the booking process.

Unless otherwise stated on the voucher or in the respective Terms and Conditions of Participation, the voucher shall be valid from the date of issuance until the end of the year of issuance and thereafter for a further three calendar years.

The voucher must be redeemed within its validity period in connection with a booking. The decisive point in time shall be the completion of the booking via Lufthansa.com, unless otherwise stated on the voucher or in the respective Terms and Conditions of Participation.

Example: If a voucher is issued in 2026, it may be redeemed until 31 December 2029, unless otherwise stated on the voucher or in the respective Terms and Conditions of Participation.

The voucher may be used exclusively for permitted bookings via Lufthansa.com. Unless otherwise or additionally provided on the voucher or in the respective Terms and Conditions of Participation, permitted bookings shall be cross-border flight bookings bearing a Lufthansa flight number and operated by Lufthansa.

The voucher may be redeemed exclusively for flights operated by Lufthansa. Further restrictions, in particular with regard to the place of departure, destination area, route, travel period, booking channel, booking currency or eligible booking, may arise from the voucher or the respective Terms and Conditions of Participation.

Domestic German flights are excluded. To the extent that the respective Terms and Conditions of Participation provide for redemption only for specific destinations or routes, the voucher may be used only within the scope of such specific redemption restriction.

If the voucher value exceeds the total amount payable for the booking, the remaining balance shall continue to be available until the expiry of the validity period. It may be used for further bookings that are permitted under these Terms and Conditions of Use and, where applicable, under the respective Terms and Conditions of Participation.

Upon expiry of the validity period, any remaining balance shall lapse. Cash payment, interest, payment in any other form or any other reimbursement of the remaining balance shall be excluded; mandatory statutory rights shall remain unaffected.

Unless otherwise provided on the voucher or in the respective Terms and Conditions of Participation, the voucher is not personalised. The holder of the voucher code therefore need not be the same person as the passenger of the flight journey to be booked.

To the extent that the respective Terms and Conditions of Participation exclude the transfer of the prize to third parties, such exclusion shall remain unaffected. Use of the voucher for a booking for another travelling person shall be permitted only to the extent that this is not excluded by the voucher and the respective Terms and Conditions of Participation.

The sale of the voucher shall be excluded.

The commercial transfer, sale or other misuse of the voucher shall not be permitted.

If flight tickets paid for in whole or in part by means of a voucher are cancelled and submitted for refund in accordance with the applicable statutory provisions or fare conditions, the refundable amount paid by means of the voucher shall be credited back to the voucher.

The voucher value shall not be paid out in cash. Interest, payment in any other form, exchange or any other reimbursement of the voucher shall be excluded; mandatory statutory rights, in particular statutory refund rights and air passenger rights, shall remain unaffected.

Unless otherwise provided on the voucher or in the respective Terms and Conditions of Participation, the voucher is not personalised. As a general rule, knowledge of the voucher code shall therefore be sufficient for redemption.

Lufthansa shall not be liable for any damages arising from bookings made by an unauthorised third party upon provision of the correct voucher code, unless Lufthansa is responsible for such misuse. Liability pursuant to Clause 10 shall remain unaffected.

No replacement voucher shall be issued if the voucher code is lost, incorrectly disclosed or redeemed by an unauthorised third party, unless Lufthansa is responsible therefor. Mandatory statutory rights shall remain unaffected.

Lufthansa shall be liable without limitation in cases of wilful misconduct and gross negligence, in the event of injury to life, body or health, and in all other cases in which liability cannot be limited or excluded by mandatory statutory law.

In the event of a slightly negligent breach of material contractual obligations, Lufthansa’s liability shall be limited to the damage that is typical for the contract and reasonably foreseeable. Material contractual obligations are obligations the fulfilment of which is a prerequisite for the proper use and redemption of the voucher and on the performance of which users may regularly rely.

In all other respects, Lufthansa’s liability for damage caused by slight negligence shall be excluded.

The foregoing liability provisions shall apply mutatis mutandis in favour of Lufthansa’s legal representatives, employees and vicarious agents.

Information on the processing of personal data by Lufthansa in connection with the issuance, use and redemption of the voucher is available in Lufthansa’s Data Protection Notices. To the extent that the voucher is issued as part of a prize draw, the data protection notices contained in the respective Terms and Conditions of Participation shall apply in addition.

Should any provision of these Terms and Conditions of Use be or become invalid or unenforceable, the validity and enforceability of the remaining provisions shall remain unaffected.

These Terms and Conditions of Use and the legal relationship between the users and Lufthansa shall be governed by German law. This choice of law shall be without prejudice to any mandatory consumer protection provisions of the state in which the respective user has his or her habitual residence.
