China Mainland Travel Information for Passengers During the COVID-19 Period

Covid-19 Test Regulations and Chinese Customs Requirements for Long-haul Flights From/To China Mainland

All passengers are kindly asked to immediately get in contact with their ticketing agency or Austrian/Lufthansa/SWISS Service Center to check if the itinerary bound for China Mainland provides enough time to obtain necessary documents and codes in the originating and transfer country to avoid any denied boarding.

To reflect the new dual Covid-19 test regulations and Customs requirements by the authorities, following steps are mandatory by the passenger to board a flight from/to China Mainland based on the citizenship and flight options (direct or transfer flight).

  • For a Lufthansa long-haul flight from Germany to China Mainland two Covid-19 tests (PCR and IgM antibody test within 48 hours before departure) plus a Green HS Code (Chinese Citizens) or a Green HDC Code (Non-Chinese Citizens) are required to board the aircraft. In addition, a Red Chinese Customs Entry/Exit Health Code (at the day of departure) is required to board and deboard the aircraft.
  • In case of a cross-border feeder flight, the passenger must take the two Covid-19 tests and apply for the Green HS code or Green HDC code in BOTH countries (country of first departure and transit country).

Important notice:  

  • Check frequently the announcements for the latest updates of the Chinese Embassy/ Consulate in the transit and the country of your first departure and the Department of Interior and Department of Health of your transit and the country of your final destination.
  • Check the entry and visa regulations carefully which applies for your nationality for the transit country. It is mandatory to leave the transit area of the airport to obtain the Covid-19 tests in the transit country.
  • Covid-19 test centers at Zurich airport for passengers to Mainland China.
  • Covid-19 test centers at Vienna airport for passengers to Mainland China.
  • Plan enough time to obtain and validate the two Covid-19 tests by the Embassy in the transit country (including waiting time).
  • The validity period of 48 hours of the negative Covid-19 test certificate is based on the sampling time. For example, if the sample is taken on 10 November, and the negative test certificate is issued on 11 November, your flight departure date should be on/before 12 November.
  • All passengers (adult, child and infant) regardless of the age need Covid-19 tests including the respective HS Code or HDC Code or Health Declaration Form. If an exception for infants applies by the local Chinese Embassy, an official written proof by the Embassy is mandatory at boarding.
  • Red Customs Entry/Exit Health Code is valid for 24 hours and needs to be requested earliest 24 hours before arrival in China Mainland or departure from China Mainland. Keep a screenshot of the red Customs Code in case no mobile phone reception is available after arrival.



Examples

  • A journey Vienna via Frankfurt to Shanghai requires a PCR and an IgM antibody test in Austria within 48 hours before departure in Vienna plus a Green HS Code or Green HDC Code by the Chinese Embassy in Austria. On top, the passenger requires a PCR and an IgM antibody test in Germany within 48 hours before departure in Frankfurt plus a Green HS Code or Green HDC Code from the Chinese Embassy in Germany. Additionally, the passenger requires a Red Customs Entry/Exit Health Code at the day of departure in Frankfurt, earliest 24h before landing in China Mainland.
    •  4 Covid-19 tests in total (2 in the departure country, 2 in the transit country) + Customs Code

  • A journey Hamburg via Frankfurt to Nanjing requires a nucleic acid and an IgM antibody test in Germany within 48 hours before departure in Hamburg plus a Green HS Code or validated Health Declaration Form or Green HDC Code from by the Embassy in Germany. Additionally, the passenger requires a Red Customs Entry/Exit Health Code at the day of departure in Frankfurt, earliest 24h before landing in China Mainland.
    • 2 Covid-19 tests in total (2 in the departure country) + Customs Code
