Be Picky Washington, D.C.: Selected Tips from Insiders
See the world's fastest aircraft and marvel at NASA's most famous space shuttle – Lufthansa purser Peter Jilke recommends visiting the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, one of the most impressive aviation and space museums in the US
As a huge aviation and aerospace enthusiast, I consider the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center a must whenever I'm in Washington, D.C. The museum features two enormous exhibition hangars showcasing spectacular aircraft like the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird. This U.S. Air Force reconnaissance plane holds the record for the fastest manned, non-rocket-powered flight, reaching a speed of 2,193 mph (3,530 kmh). It can fly at altitudes up to 85,000 feet (26,000 meters) – more than twice as high as commercial airliners. Simply incredible!
Space Shuttle Discovery – NASA's Record-Holder
Also not to be missed is the Space Shuttle Discovery, displayed in the James S. McDonnell Space Hangar – a true piece of space history located right in the heart of Washington! Discovery is NASA's most traveled space shuttle: it spent a total of 365 days in space, orbited Earth 5,830 times, and covered nearly 150 million miles (240 million kilometers). No other shuttle has matched these achievements. Since 2012, Discovery has been on display in its original condition at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center and remains a major highlight for visitors. Admission is free, as it is for all Smithsonian Institution museums.
