Be Picky Milan: Selected Tips from Insiders
Fancy a quick getaway from Milan? No problem – Lake Como is just about an hour away by train or car. Lufthansa marketing expert Yasmine Candussio recommends the lesser-known eastern shore of the lake. Plus, here are three insider tips for Milan
When I'm in Milan, I love taking a trip to Lake Como. Bellano, a small town on the less touristy eastern shore, is only about an hour's drive away. I adore the slightly weathered charm of an old Italian village. The promenade, however, is peaceful and well-kept, and the view of the surrounding mountains is simply stunning.
My favorite thing to do is stroll along the lake and watch the boats go by. Sometimes, you even see one pulling a water-skier. If you're tempted to get in the water yourself, you can take a dip at the public beach in the summer.
For lunch, I like stopping at Ristorante Cavallo Bianco. The terrace sits right by the water. The food is hearty and delicious – classic northern Italian fare, with pizza or fish and a glass of white wine.

Art in the open air: In Via Pesto and around the Ortica district, enormous murals decorate public spaces. The OrMe (Ortica Memoria) street art initiative uses its murals to tell the stories of the neighborhood – a walk through this creative district is well worth it.
A green retreat in the heart of the city: Giardino della Guastalla is Milan's oldest garden – and yet, it's little known. At the baroque fish pond or under centuries-old trees, you'll find a quiet break from the hustle and bustle of the city.
A literary hideaway: The independent bookstore Libreria Verso in the Ticinese district is a haven for book and coffee lovers. You can browse at leisure, enjoy an espresso while reading, and often find yourself in conversations about literature, politics, or life.
