Flying with children

Flying is always an experience for children. So that you are ideally prepared for the special needs of children when they travel, we recommend that you take note of our advice on flying with babies and infants before you set off. With the right preparation, the journey will be enjoyable for everyone involved.

Have you thought of everything? - Travel documents for children

From this summer on children need an own travel document. Entries on one of their parent's passports are after 26 June 2012 no longer valid - independent of the age of the child. According to this, children need from then on an own travel document with passport photo when travelling abroad. Due to expected rush on the passport authorities before summer holidays, it is recommended to apply for a children passport, a passport or an identity card early enough.*

*This regulation applies only to travelers with German identification documents

Flight booking and seat reservation

If you will be travelling with a baby please tell us this when you book your flight. Infants who turn two during the journey will require their own seat; a child fare will be charged for the whole journey.

As a child-friendly airline, Lufthansa permits one free piece of baggage weighing up to 23 kg for children under two years of age, irrespective of class flown or destination. Further information is available under free baggage allowance.

On Lufthansa long-haul flights special baby cots are available. Please be aware that the number of seats with cots is limited. The bassinets are suitable for babies up to 14 kg and up to 83 cm in length and are provided free of charge. Night flights are especially suitable for journeys with small children because children can then maintain their usual sleep pattern and get some rest.

You will find information on the use of child restraint systems here.
