The call of the mountains: the most beautiful views in Germany and the Austrian Tyrol

Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Kitzbühel, Zillertal, the Wilder-Kaiser - Brixental region: in Munich you are never far away from the most impressive mountains in Germany and the Austrian Tyrol. We’ve put together some information for you on this page about the best areas for hiking.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen: the ‘Top of Germany’!

Zugspitze - Top of GermanyIt’s no exaggeration: the 2,962 m (9,718 ft) high Zugspitze is a mountain of superlatives. Germany’s highest peak has three glaciers on its slopes, a unique 360° panorama with Alpine peaks from four countries and a range of attractive leisure activities.

A rack railway runs from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to the idyllic Eibsee Lake at the foot of the mountain. The ascent in the Eibsee cable car offers spectacular views before the epic panorama at the summit of the Zugspitze opens up new horizons. You can reach the glaciers at 2,600 m on the Gletscherbahn cable car before the rack railway brings you conveniently back through the Zugspitze tunnel to your departure point. The perfect round trip!

Zillertal hiking trailsLush Alpine meadows and pleasant temperatures awaken our desire to head for the mountains. Surrounded by numerous ‘three-thousanders’ - mountains over 3,000 m high - the Zillertal covers all the climatic zones of the Alps. Relaxation on the green valley floor and exercise in the so-called ‘bracing climate’ from 1,500 m are ideal for the whole body. Hiking and biking in the Zillertal Alps, however, is not just about reaching the highest peaks and achieving the greatest elevation gain, but also about the best possible stops. More than 150 mountain inns offer tasty treats made from regional products.

The imposing panoramic views, the fresh mountain air and the wide choice of activities will benefit body and soul and leave you feeling great.
