From what age should a child fly?
It's safe for a baby even only a few months old to accompany its parents on a flight. Although the destination should be carefully selected and the journey well prepared. Please check our advice regarding Travel preparation for children.
General advice
- We offer you the opportunity of taking your baby's push chair right up to the aircraft door. Our flight attendants will then take it from you and hand it back to you immediately after landing
- With Lufthansa, families with children are among the first passengers to board the aircraft. Our flight attendants are happy to help you find your seats, stow your baggage and assist with fastening children's seatbelts
- If your child has a cold give him or her nose drops to help balancing the change in air pressure. The best time is half an hour before takeoff and after landing
- As children have larger body surface in relation to their weight the evaporation via the skin is considerably higher. Therefore they should have a sufficient amount of liquid to drink. Please pack some additional drinks in your hand luggage. We recommend fruit juices, non-carbonated water, or tea. Try to avoid carbonated drinks such as cola because they cause wind and also have a diuretic effect
- Pack nibbles for the flight. We always have tasty titbits aboard for our small passengers, but nothing can replace a child's favourite candy bar or snack! They comfort children with a feeling of familiarity amid a new environment
- The different climatic conditions aboard and at your destination can best be balanced by the so-called 'onion look'. That means dressing your child in layers of clothing that can be removed or put back on according to need
- Please don't forget thick socks. Because your child's feet might swell at a high altitude we recommend that you remove his or her shoes on board
- Keep your child occupied during the flight. Pack suitable toys into your hand luggage. We also have small toys on board to help children pass the time
Flying with babies
- On Lufthansa long haul flight there are special baby beds available. Please beware that there is only a limited number of seats with baby beds available
- When booking your flight please inform our staff or the travel agent that you will be travelling with a baby
- Before takeoff and landing, give your child its dummy or its bottle to drink. That will help him or her to better balance the change in air pressure
- Lufthansa carries baby food on all its flights. But you shouldn't forget your baby's bottle and its favourite food! Water for the bottle is available on board. Our flight attendants will also warm the baby's bottle, and glasses, too. Just ask one of them - they’ll be glad to help you!
- There are changing tables in the washrooms on board
Flying with small children
- No special safety measures are necessary for children weighing more than 18 kg - but make sure they are strapped in
- On our long haul flight you can, amongst other things, select funny cartoons and animation programmes for your child from our varied entertainment programme
- In First and Business Class, children are given an amenity kit with all kinds of nice surprises
- Play a game together. We have put together some ideas for games in a pdf that you can print out and take along on your flight
Children on board with Lu and Cosmo
Lu, the little crane and his best friend Cosmo make flying child’s play. Our children’s programme offers delicious food, as well as fun and games for little ones on board.
Sarah Wiener creates menus for the youngest Lufthansa passengers
Well-known chefs have been creating the children’s menus for Lufthansa since 2002.
Now during the summer months our young passengers in all travel classes and on all long-haul flights can enjoy dishes by famous top chef Sarah Wiener.
This star chef is very concerned to ensure children have a balanced diet. That’s why she avoids sugar to a large extent, often using healthy honey to sweeten dishes instead. She also only uses high-quality fats like olive oil in her cooking – and then only in small amounts.
So that the menus entertain children on board, they are appropriately child-friendly and most of them also have a playful element. For example, a variety of spreads such as herb quark, tomato cream cheese and curry cream cheese are arranged like a colourful paintbox.
We offer children’s menus on many Lufthansa flights. Please order children’s menus when you book your flight or no later than 24 hours before departure from the Lufthansa Service Center. By the way, parents can also ask for the recipes to take away and cook at home.
Fun and games
Lu and Cosmo also provide entertainment after children have eaten. A colouring book with coloured crayons and puzzles, as well as card games and memory games with Lu and Cosmo motifs to collect and play with make a flight with Lufthansa an unforgettable experience for children.
