Tell us your needs

As early as when you book your flight you can help us ensure that you get the service you need on the ground and during your flight. For us to be able to provide you with the best possible comfort at the airport and on board our aircraft we need some information from you in advance.

If you reserve a ticket by phone, please point out your special needs before the booking is completed.

You can also, of course, book your journey via the Internet. Following an Internet booking you should without fail tell us your needs by calling Lufthansa Service Center because such details cannot be given in the online booking form.

Book in good time

The earlier you make your booking and the more detailed the information you give us, the more carefully we can plan the procedure of your flight. Your timely reservation is also important because for care and safety reasons only a certain number of limited mobility passengers who are travelling alone can be carried per flight.

Passengers with a wheelchair

Provision of a wheelchair by Lufthansa is free of charge for you. Even if you take your own folding wheelchair with you there are no costs for its transport. Your wheelchair will be transported in the cargo hold.

Please tell us as early as when you book your flight whether we should provide a wheelchair for you at your departure or destination airport. Should you wish to take your own wheelchair with you, please tell us its dimensions and weight and its special features (folding/non-folding, sport wheelchair).

If your wheelchair is battery powered, please find out what type of batteries it takes and let us know when you book your flight, as gel-cell, dry-cell and wet-cell batteries can stay in the wheelchair. However, the battery terminals must be covered with electrical insulating tape or plastic caps to prevent an accidental short circuit. Additionally, either you or your companion will need to secure and disconnect wet-cell batteries before boarding.

Please notify us at least 48 hours before departure about essential mobility aids such as electric wheelchairs.

Number of passengers in wheelchairs

The number of unaccompanied passengers in wheelchairs is dependent on the type of aircraft and restricted as follows:

  • 5 per flight on intercontinental and continental Lufthansa flights and on regional flights with more than 70 seats;
  • 3 per flight on regional flights with up to 70 seats.

The number of wheelchairs per flight is restricted as follows:

  • 3 on intercontinental Lufthansa flights, except for the A300;
  • 2 on continental Lufthansa flights including the A300;
  • 1 on all regional flights.

In addition to this, accompanied passengers in wheelchairs can be carried. The exception is on flights not using one of Lufthansa’s own aircraft, but used by Lufthansa under a wet lease arrangement (CLH, EW, KI, IQ, EN). In such cases the number of wheelchair-bound passengers is restricted to one, irrespective of whether or not they are accompanied.
