Should your baggage exceed the limitations of the baggage allowance regarding the number of pieces, its size or its weight we will have to charge a fee for your excess baggage. You can calculate it yourself and plan it into your travel budget right from the start. The charges specified always refer to a single route (charges should therefore be added up for outbound and return flights).

Charges where the 'Weight Concept' applies

The Lufthansa zone system is an especially concise rule to calculate the excess baggage rate. The amount is not linked to the ticket price, but based on the destination. So for a flight within Germany, for example, the fee for one kilo of excess baggage is €5; on a flight from Germany to Spain it is €10, and to Africa or Asia €30. In all cases where bags are overweight, a minimum fee of 30 euros will be charged if the kilo rate payable is below this amount.

table
Zones and prices
Zone 1: Within Germany, Italy as well as routes between
third countries on which Lufthansa passengers are carried (e.g. in the Middle East,
Asia and South America).
€5/kg
Zone 2: Within Europe, incl. Germany (without CIS). €10/kg
Zone 3: Between Zone 2 and CIS as well as the Middle East. €20/kg
Zone 4: Between Zone 2 and Africa and Asia. €30/kg
Zone 5: Between Zones 3 and 4 as well as between Mexico and these Zones
and with two consecutive long-haul flights(e.g. from Johannesburg via Frankfurt
to Hong Kong).
€40/kg

These prices apply if you fly the first leg of your journey with Lufthansa. For other airlines the calculation may be done according to the IATA rules (the worldwide IATA standard for the calculation of the excess baggage fee is 1.5% per kg of the highest one-way fare in Economy Class).

Charges based on the 'Piece Concept' for tickets up to 31.12.2009

For all flight routes not listed above, the 'piece concept' is used as the basis for charging excess baggage fees. This means that every adult passenger may take up to two checked bags free of charge.

Please take note of the free baggage allowances shown in the 'Free baggage allowance' section, as well as the maximum dimensions and weight per bag. Different regulations apply in each of the service classes - First (F)/ Business (C)/ Economy (Y) - and there are also a number of regional exceptions. For example: two bags are allowed in Economy Class with a weight limit per bag of 23 kg and maximum dimensions of 158 cm. In First and Business Class, the weight limit is 32 kg.

Excess baggage fees are always levied for a checked portion of a journey. For passengers with a free baggage allowance based on the 'piece concept' on routes where the 'weight concept' applies (e.g. after a break in their journey), the 'piece concept' free baggage allowance remains applicable. However, excess baggage fees would then be calculated by weight as per 'weight concept' charges (cost per kg).

Charges according to country of departure or arrival

The unit costs under the 'piece concept' may vary according to the country of departure or arrival. You find a summary of all fees, shown in table form, in the following PDFs:

Sport and special baggage for tickets up to 31.12.2009

We would like you to be able to practise your sport while you’re away too. That’s why Lufthansa offers special excess baggage rates for sports equipment. Please note: sports equipment must be declared 24 hours before the flight.

Sports equipment is divided into three categories: small, medium and large. The appropriate rates for both baggage systems, as well as exceptions to these categories, are listed below. All bags not included in the lists are charged according to their weight and/or the size of the corresponding category.

Sports equipment where the ‘weight concept’ applies

Where the Weight Concept applies, one ski bag is allowed free of charge, over and above the free baggage allowance. Each further ski bag and other types of sports bag are not part of the free baggage allowance under the Weight Concept and will be charged at the relevant rate.

The pricing range for baggage is divided into small, medium and large categories. Underneath you may find a tabular overview as a printable PDF.
