Crossing the border faster at Frankfurt airport
Due to the automated border control at Frankfurt airport you can handle all the formalities for crossing the border yourself. The manual passport control at the counter is obsolete. After an initial registration you simply use the so-called "auto control" tracks and avoid, especially at peak times, having to wait in lines in front of the border control counters.
Conditions for participation
You have to register once with the German Federal Police (Deutsche Bundespolizei).
All citizens from EU countries and Switzerland entitled to unrestricted freedom of movement who are 18 years or older and hold a machine-readable passport that is valid for at least six months may participate.
Fast enrolment for automated border control
After a quick enrolment you can use the automated border control. The enrolment takes place in the Enrolment Center at Frankfurt airport (Terminal 1, Lufthansa Priority Check-in area in departure hall A).
Opening times: daily between 6:30 am and 9:30 pm.
Registration process
The data of your passport will be checked during registration and stored in a local data base of the German Federal Police.
With the help of a digital camera your iris will be scanned. The procedure is completely safe for your health. After storing the code of your iris in the local data base the registration is completed.
The automated border control in practice
It only takes you seconds to pass through the border control.
Step 1:
The actual crossing of the border takes place in the "Auto control-lanes" at Frankfurt airport. There are two lanes each inside both Area B, level 2 and 3 (entry and exit).
Step 2:
Through placing your passport on a document reader in front of the Auto control lanes the doors to the verification area will open.
Step 3:
Inside the verification area you look at the lens in the iris identification device. Your live picture will be compared with the stored data. At the same time your passport data is checked at the information system of the Federal Police.
Step 4:
If the comparison is successful you may cross the border. If not you will be lead to a border control counter and checked manually.
Advice on data protection
Only your personal data (name, date of birth, nationality, gender) the passport number, the expiry date and the digital picture of your iris will be stored.
The collected data will be exclusively stored in a data base of the German Federal Police at Frankfurt airport and will not be passed on - not even to other federal offices and department.
The data of the participants will be exclusively used for the automated border control. Should the programme be terminated or should the participant decide to not take part anymore the data will be deleted immediately.
