The 46-year-old Jürgens, who hails from the town of Unna in North Rhine-Westphalia, is renowned for the imaginative way he arranges food on the plate and has, over the years, cooked his way to being one of the world’s culinary elite.
Yet Jürgens, who today is head chef of the gourmet Restaurant Überfahrt in the Althoff Seehotel Überfahrt in Rottach-Egern on Lake Tegernsee, got into cooking purely by accident. His father decided that the then 16-year old should prove himself and sent him to Bad Homburg where Jürgens’ sister managed a delicatessen and restaurant. Gradually he began helping in the restaurant and discovered, quite by chance, a passion for cooking.
Jürgens’ culinary skills were honed working for renowned Michelin-starred chefs such as Heinz Winkler and Eckard Witzigmann. The numerous distinctions that Jürgens has already gained for his cuisine include being voted ‘Chef of the Year 2013’ by Gault-Millau and winning three Michelin stars.
