Lufthansa makes adjustment to its long haul fuel surcharge

Surcharge for short and medium haul flights remains unchanged

Prices of crude oil have risen in the recent weeks, resulting in higher fuel procurement costs for Lufthansa. In response to this development, the airline is therefore increasing its fuel
surcharge on long haul flights by each five euros per flight leg according to the following zones:
- long-haul destinations in the Middle East, East Africa (in future 82 euros)
- long-haul destinations in North America and India (in future 87 euros)
- long-haul destinations in South America, Central-, West- and Southern Africa, Southeast Asia and the Far East (in future 97 euros)
The fuel surcharge on domestic German and European flights and flights to/from Israel, Lebanon, Jordan and Northern Africa remain unchanged at 24 euros per flight leg.
The new adjusted surcharges will apply to all tickets issued on or after 28 April 2010. All the fares that Lufthansa offers or advertises already include the fuel surcharge.
Lufthansa continually monitors oil prices and will make any future adjustments to the fuel surcharge dependent on further trends in the price of jet fuel.

Duty-free items

Passengers who have purchased spirits, perfume or other liquids in US Duty Free shops and who are changing flights at European airports to fly on to other EU countries, have until now had to check in their shopping bags containing the duty free items. The EU has relaxed this regulation: this relaxation applies to Singapore, South Korea and Croatia and latterly also to passengers from the USA and Canada, who in future will be able to keep their shopping bags on board with them before departure. Mandatory ESTA registration for US-bound travellers

Electronic authorisation now required for entry into USA

Starting March 20, 2010, entry requirements for passengers traveling to the U.S. that were initiated in January 2009 are becoming more stringent for airlines: passengers traveling to the United States without a visa under the Visa Waiver program is prohibited if the passengers have not received an electronic entry permit from the U.S. authorities prior to departure. Registrations can be completed online via ESTA, the electronic system for travel authorization. As of March 20, 2010, if a passenger is not registered at the time of check-in for the flight into the U.S., they will be refused entry into the United States.

Online authorisation can obtained solely from the website which has been set up for applications by the US authorities. The process is free. In most cases, applicants will be emailed confirmation of approval to travel within a matter of seconds.
The authorisation is then valid for two years or until the date their passport expires, whichever comes first. Information submitted in an application can also be amended on
the website. More details about ESTA as well as questions and answers about the process are also available on the website.
During a transitional period, passengers must still complete on board the green I-94W arrival/departure form which will be handed as previously to US officials on arrival at the
airport. Lufthansa advises its passengers to submit an application for online authorisation to enter the USA well before their flight and to carry a print-out of it throughout their journey.
