Whether your preference is for the Tyrol, the Swiss Alps or the Valais Alps, Lufthansa flies you conveniently to many ski destinations worldwide and you can take your ski gear with you without problems. You will find all the important information about transporting your ski bags below:
Registering your ski baggage
Because of limited capacities and differing rules on partner airlines, we cannot guarantee when you book that your ski baggage will be accepted in every case. Please note that you need to register sports baggage under the reservation hotline. Please register your ski bag up to 24 hours before departure on the same telephone number, regardless of whether your ski bag is within your free baggage allowance or is being checked in as excess baggage.
If you are taking your ski bags with you as excess baggage, please pay the required flat fee directly at the Lufthansa counter at the airport.
Ski bags as part of your free baggage allowance
When travelling with Lufthansa you also have the option of taking ski baggage with you on all routes except those from/to the USA, Mexico and Central America* (does not apply for the new Economy Class Light fare on routes within Europe – see below). Please note that this rule only applies to flights operated by Lufthansa.
|Additional ski or snowboard equipment|
|First Class||1 piece at 32 kg|
|Business Class||1 piece at 32 kg|
|Economy Class** / Premium Economy Class||1 piece at 23 kg|
*Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama
**This does not apply for the new Economy Class Light fare on routes within Europe. This applies for bookings starting 28 July 2015 and departures starting 1 October 2015.
Flat fees for ski equipment as special baggage
If your ski baggage exceeds your free baggage allowance, you can of course check this in as excess baggage; you will find the corresponding flat fees for your ski bags below:
|Type of Sporting Equipment||Charge (continental)||Charge (intercontinental)||Definition|
|Ski Equipment*||50 EUR|
|a pair of ski, a pair of poles, a pair of boots (even in separate bag), a helmet|
|Snowboard Equipment||50 EUR|
|a snowboard, a pair of boots (even in separate bag), a helmet|
*The first piece of checked ski or snowboarding equipment is included in the free baggage allowance regulations on all flights except those to/from the USA, Mexico and Central America (Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama) and is therefore free of charge. The maximum weight of the first piece of ski or snowboarding equipment must, however, be within the relevant free baggage limits of the respective booking class. Each further piece of ski or snowboarding equipment or the first and subsequent pieces of ski or snowboarding equipment on flights to/from the USA, Mexico and Central America (Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama) is charged in line with the fees specified above.
Checking in your ski baggage
Your ski bags will always be carried as bulky items. You can therefore leave them at the designated airport counters. At Munich Airport you can check in your ski bags at the bulky baggage counters 425-426 and at Frankfurt Airport at the bulky baggage counter 445. Please make sure that you arrive at the airport with your bulky luggage in good time prior to departure. In Frankfurt you should be at check-in at least one hour before departure.
