Terms and Conditions for booking additional pieces of baggage

Passengers have the option of booking additional pieces of baggage for a fee.

• The offer only applies to passengers who have a booking with a flight number from Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, or Air Dolomiti, and where the flight is operated by Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Discover Airlines or Air Dolomiti (or a wet-leasing partner) and to passengers with a valid ticket. For other operating airlines, baggage rules and fees may vary.
• The extra bag charge applies to one-way flights to the final destination.
• The booked baggage must not exceed the standard weight of 23 kg and the standard dimensions of 158 cm (H+L+W). For baggage that exceeds the standard weight or the standard dimensions, the applicable excess baggage rate will be calculated at the airport.
• The baggage booking does not apply to the transport of animals or to sports equipment.
• Additional baggage can be paid for at the time of booking your flight or after booking up to two (2) hours before departure via My Bookings.
• The number of items of baggage that you can book is restricted. Passengers can book up to five (5) additional pieces of baggage, depending on the route.
• In addition, one additional piece of baggage that exceeds the standard weight of 23 kg (max. 32 kg), or the standard size of 158 cm (max. 292 cm (H+L+W)), or both, can be booked.
• Additional baggage can also be booked at the airport either at the ticket desk or check-in desk at a higher price. The additional baggage fees are charged in the currency of the country you are departing from.
• Lufthansa reserves the right to change or to modify fares or the existing terms and conditions at any time without prior notice.
• The receipt for your extra bag booking must be retained up until the end of your journey, and must be presented upon request at the ticket or check-in desk at the airport . The receipt will be sent to you via email to the address given during the purchasing process.
• The additional baggage booking is only valid for the flight shown on the receipt on the stated date. If the flight is rebooked, the booked additional item of baggage is no longer valid, except under the circumstances described below under «Rebooking and refunds».
• Additional baggage booking charges are not refundable except under the circumstances described below under ‘Rebooking and refunds’.
• All baggage is transported in accordance with the Lufthansa General Terms and Conditions of Carriage for Passengers and Baggage.

Special rules for booking additional items of baggage

Continental flights:

Economy Basic fare on short- and medium-haul flights:

• The Economy Basic fare on short- and medium-haul flights includes only one personal item (40 x 30 x 15 cm) that may be taken into the aircraft cabin. Passengers have the option to add one (1) piece of carry-on baggage with a maximum weight of 8 kg and dimensions of 55 x 40 x 23 cm for a fee, either online via My Bookings or through the Service Center.
• The Economy Basic fare on short- and medium-haul flights does not include any free checked baggage. Lufthansa offers the benefit of a reduced price for the first piece of checked baggage (23 kg, total dimensions 158 cm). This applies only to passengers holding a booking with a Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, or Air Dolomiti flight number, and whose flight is operated by Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Air Dolomiti, or Discover Airlines (or a wet-lease partner).
• Miles & More members with HON Circle, Senators, as well as Star Alliance Gold status have the option of taking one piece of carry-on baggage into the cabin free of charge in addition to a personal item when traveling on an Economy Basic fare on short- and medium haul flights. Adding a second piece of carry-on baggage for a fee is not permitted.

Economy Light fare

• The Light fare does not include a checked free baggage allowance. On the Economy Class Light fare, Lufthansa offers you the additional benefit of a discount on the first bag (23 kg, overall 158 cm). Applies only to passengers who have a booking with a flight number for Lufthansa/SWISS/Brussels/ Austrian Airlines or Air Dolomiti, where the flight is operated by Lufthansa/SWISS/Austrian/Brussels Airlines/Air Dolomiti or Discover Airlines (or a wet-leasing partner) and who hold a valid ticket for an Economy Light fare.
• Miles & More members with Frequent Traveller, Senator or HON Circle status, as well as Star Alliance Gold members, enjoy higher free baggage allowances. However, the higher free baggage allowances do not apply to flights with Economy Light fares.

Intercontinental flights:

Economy Light fare

• The Light fare does not include a checked free baggage allowance. On the Economy Class Light fare, Lufthansa offers you the additional benefit of a discount on the first bag (23 kg, overall 158 cm). Applies only to passengers who have a booking with a flight number for Lufthansa/SWISS/Brussels/ Austrian Airlines or Air Dolomiti, where the flight is operated by Lufthansa/SWISS/Austrian/Brussels Airlines/Air Dolomiti or Discover Airlines (or a wet-leasing partner) and who hold a valid ticket for an Economy Light fare.
• Miles & More members with HON Circle, Senator and Star Alliance Gold status on intercontinental routes* have the option of taking the first piece of baggage free of charge on the Economy Light fare. Free carriage can only be registered at the check-in counter. If the baggage on the Economy Light fares is booked online, via the Service Center or via a travel agency, corresponding charges will apply.
• On some flight routes**, you will benefit from reduced rates for a second item of baggage (23 kg, 158 cm dimensions) on the Lufthansa Economy fare.
• Miles & More members with Frequent Traveller, Senator and HON Circle status, as well as Star Alliance Gold members, can enjoy higher free baggage allowances. However, in this case and on these flight routes, the reduced booking fee for the second item of baggage does not apply; the regular price for additional baggage bookings applies to each additional checked item of baggage. However, the above-mentioned benefits do not apply to flights on the Economy Light fare.

* This does not apply to flights to and from Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.

**Applies to flights to/from the USA, Canada, Mexico, Central America, Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama.

Premium Economy Light fare

• The Premium Economy Light fare includes one (1) checked free baggage allowance (23 kg, overall 158 cm).
• Miles & More members with HON Circle, Senator and Star Alliance Gold status have the option of taking a second piece of baggage free of charge on intercontinental routes* with the Premium Economy Light fare. Free carriage can only be registered at the check-in counter. If the item of baggage in the Premium Economy Light fares is booked online, via the Service Center or via a travel agency, corresponding charges will apply.

* This does not apply to flights to and from Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.

Business Light fare

• The Business Light fare includes one (1) item of checked free baggage allowance (32 kg, overall 158 cm).
• Miles & More members with HON Circle, Senator and Star Alliance Gold status have the option of taking a second piece of baggage free of charge on intercontinental routes* on the Business Light fare. Free carriage can only be registered at the check-in counter. If the item of baggage on the Business Light fares is booked online, via the Service Center or via a travel agency, corresponding charges will apply.

* This does not apply to flights to and from Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.

Lufthansa reserves the right to take legal action in the event of fraud.

• infants under the age of 2 years
• flights offered or operated by airlines other than the Lufthansa Group.

• Additional baggage bookings can be transferred when changing an existing booking, provided that the fare conditions of the ticket allow for rebooking. However, it is not possible to transfer the extra baggage booking to another route, other passengers or other airlines.
• Additional baggage bookings are refundable:
  • if Lufthansa is not in a position to transport your baggage due to a change of aircraft, cancellation or interruption to a Lufthansa flight or
  • if your baggage cannot be transported for operational or security reasons that are not attributable to the passenger’s actions or omissions.
• Additional baggage bookings alone are not refundable if the flight is cancelled by the passenger.
• A refund is possible when cancelled together with the flight ticket, provided that the fare conditions of the ticket permit a refund.
• Refunds are made via the original method of payment used.
