Tehran, the rising metropolis
Enjoy your Lufthansa flight to Tehran! Situated on the flanks of the central mountains of Iran, the capital Tehran is constantly rising from south to north, from 1000 to 1700 Meters above sea level. With over 13 Million inhabitants Tehran is one of the biggest cities on earth and still growing fast. The hustle and bustle on the streets has everything you expect from a Megacity.
Rise and shine in TehranTehran’s function as capital of Iran is actually quite young, it took until the late 18th century until the rulers made Tehran their residence. Not much has survived from earlier periods because Tehran has been destroyed several times by earthquakes. The famous Golestan Palace in the south of Tehran is built on the foundations of a 16th century fortress. There are 17 buildings with spectacular façades covered in colourful tile work, beautiful fountains, wind towers and gardens. Right across the street is the Grand Bazaar that fulfils most ideas of an oriental market: A massive area that is divided into sections by merchandise, like the carpet section, jewel section or a dried fruit and spices section.
The best known sight of Tehran is the Azadi Tower, a mix of modern 1960’s architecture and traditional design. Visit the national Museum of Iran to learn about thousands of years of Persian culture, or have a look at the spectacular jewellery museum. Of course the world famous Persian carpets have their own museum, too. To get a good view over the city, get up the 435 metres high Milad Tower. Even higher, at 3700 meters above sea levels, and somewhat unexpected is the Tochal Ski Resort in the Alborz Mountains north of Tehran. It can be reached via subway and one of the longest cable cars in the world. Have fun in Tehran before you have to catch your Lufthansa flight back home.
