Brussels Information

Brussels, the capital of Europe

If you fly to Brussels (BRU) in Belgium with Lufthansa, you might expect to find yourself in the cold-hearted centre of European bureaucracy. What you will find instead is a nice and somewhat quaint European city with very relaxed inhabitants and a lot to see and experience.

Brussels, a centre of arts and culture

Brussels is the capital of Belgium, the Belgian King resides within the city in a beautiful palace. During the 15th and 16th century Brussels was the centre of Flanders, which was most famous for its high quality textiles. The period of the Flemish Masters like Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel, Vermeer, Rembrandt or Jan van Eyck made the region famous. In Brussels’ main square, the Grand-Place with its gothic town hall, you can see an echo of those times. All around the central square of Brussels are the great facades of old guild houses of craftsmen and merchants. The central Cathedral St. Michael and St. Gudula, which took 200 years to build, is also one of the architectural highlights of Brussels. Brussels’ most known sight is Manneken Pis, a statue of a little boy happily urinating. You can find it on the corner of Rue de l’Etuve/Stoofstraat and Rue des Grands Carmes/Lievevrouwbroerstraat. It has been around since 1450 and successfully represents the easy-going character of the city. In 1987 Brussels put up a female equivalent, Jeanneke Pis, to represent the other half of the inhabitants.

Brussels, an adventure for your taste buds

Maybe Manneken und Jeanneke indulged too much in the famous Belgian beer: Over a thousand different kinds of beer are known in Belgium. Some of those brews are extremely strong; others are flavoured with cherry or other fruits and spices. You need a firm basis of good food to be able to sample all these different beers, but that is no problem in Brussels. Over 1800 restaurants, cafes, bistros and street food vendors are feeding the citizens and visitors with great culinary delights. The Belgian version of Fish n Chips is a combination of the famous Pommes Frites with mussels, sold by street vendors everywhere in town. A heartier meal is the “Lapin à la Gueuze”, a rabbit stewed in local beer. The famous Brussel sprouts are served as a soup with cream, called “Crème Bruxelloise”. Brussels is also considered the capital of chocolatiers, so feel free to discover your inner child in one of many candy shops and take a big box of the finest chocolates on your Lufthansa flight home.
