If you want to get a feel for the vastness of the North American landmass, start with a Lufthansa flight to Canada. While there is a regular city life in Ontario (ONT), Toronto (YYZ), Montreal (YUL) or Calgary (YYC), most of Canada is empty wilderness.
North America: From Nowhere to New York City
The beauty of the French-speaking Québec area is quite under-appreciated, while the French influenced cuisine is well known throughout the continent. The historic centre of Québec City is the oldest in North America. Going from the populated east to Vancouver on the pacific west coast in the province British Columbia may be the adventure of your life, but it may also take four weeks to make the coast-to coast road trip through untouched nature. Another direction to go is South from Toronto, to the Niagara Falls, which sits on the border of Canada and the State of New York, USA. To the east is New England with Boston (BOS) and New York City (JFK), but also endless coasts of sandy beaches, rolling green pastures and high mountains with ski resorts. If you go west you enter another under-appreciated part of North America, the Great Lakes region. Covering an area of around 250,000,000 square kilometres and containing one fifth of earth’s fresh water, the lakes are quite a thing to behold. Going along the lakes takes you far into the Midwest, with Minnesota being the most western state at the lakes. Detroit (DTW), Chicago (ORD), Milwaukee (MKE) and Cleveland (CLE) are the better known cities along the shores of the Great Lakes. A cruise is a fun way to explore this area.
American adventure: On the road again
For a road trip take the Route 66 from Chicago to Los Angeles (LAX), or make the Appalachian Trail from Maine in New England to Georgia in the Deep South. Go to New Orleans (MSY), the other French-influenced area of North America, party with the locals on Mardi Gras and enjoy the famous creole cuisine of southern Louisiana. The Grand Canyon, Death Valley, San Francisco (SFO), Los Angeles (LAX) and Hollywood and maybe Las Vegas (LAS) and the Mojave Desert are the destinations most known in the southwest and west of North America. But there are still the Monument Valley, the Rocky Mountains, Yosemite and Yellowstone Park, Joshua Tree and Arches National Park to visit, and still you haven’t seen it all. Seattle (SEA), the “Emerald City” in the Northwest, Portland (PDX) in Oregon, Silicon Valley south of San Francisco or San Diego (SAN) on the border between California and Mexico want to be visited, too. Wherever you want to start exploring North America, a comfortable Lufthansa flight will bring you there.
