Be Picky Johannesburg: Selected Tips From Insiders
Be Picky Johannesburg: Selected tips from insiders
For me, a safari is simply part of a trip to Johannesburg. The Pilanesberg National Park, which is only a two-hour drive from Johannesburg, is a particularly good place for a day trip. It is best to book a tour with an organizer who picks you up from your hotel and drops you off twelve hours later.
Pilanesberg National Park: a Trip Worth Taking
During the safari, you will be driven in an off-road vehicle through the national park, which is home to over 7,000 animals, including the "Big Five": elephants, rhinos, leopards, buffalos, and lions. You can observe the animals in their natural environment, completely undisturbed. You can watch baby elephants bathing, or witness lions lolling in the sun from a safe distance. I was able to take some great photos there. And the eating is also taken care of, as lunch is included. A day trip that's definitely worth it!

Day Trip to Pilanesberg National Park – Tips from the Lufthansa Editorial Team
- Start early and enter through the Bakubung Gate. The cool morning air and soft light greatly increase your chances of spotting wildlife.
- Book a guided sundowner drive. These afternoon excursions include scenic viewpoints and a stop for drinks as the sun sets.
- If you’ve scheduled a morning game drive, consider stopping in Hartbeespoort on your way back. The dam views and cosy cafés make for a relaxed break before continuing to Johannesburg.
