Unaccompanied children: Little passengers are a big deal to us

Children travelling alone need special support. With Lufthansa they are in the best hands: we look after their needs with great sensitivity – at the airport, during the flight and after landing.

Special service

More than 70,000 children each year travel alone on Lufthansa flights. They are looked after by the Lufthansa special service which ensures that the children and their relatives feel they are in good hands before take-off, during the flight and after landing.

Children aged between five and 11 years may only fly unaccompanied if they are using our special service or if they are travelling with someone who is at least 12 years old. However, children aged from 12 up to a maximum of 17 years old, who are travelling alone, can also be looked after at the request of their parents.

Please note that with partner airlines other regulations than those described here for Lufthansa may apply to unaccompanied children. If your chosen flight is operated by Eurowings, SWISS, Austrian Airlines or Brussels Airlines or one of our other airline partners, please enquire directly with the airline about the rules for children travelling alone.

Tariffs and charges

In addition to the price of the flight, there is a special service charge per segment for the special service for unaccompanied children.

Examples of calculation of the charges

Flight from Vienna via Munich to New York EUR 60 / USD/CAD 90 (for the flight within Europe) + EUR 100 / USD/CAD 150 (for the intercontinental flight) = EUR 160 / USD/CAD 240.

Flight from Delhi via Frankfurt to New York EUR 100 / USD/CAD 150 (for 1. intercontinental flight) + EUR 100 / USD/CAD 150 (for 2. intercontinental flight) = EUR 200 / USD/CAD 300.

Important travel documents and special service form

Please let us know that your child will be travelling alone, preferably as soon as you book the flight. Our practical Checklist for unaccompanied children will be particularly helpful to you in preparing for your child’s journey. At the airport you will then receive a small yellow Lufthansa shoulder bag which ideally your child should keep with them, clearly visible, throughout the entire journey. The bag should hold all the necessary travel documents:

  • valid passport/child’s ID card*
  • visa for the destination country**
  • travel insurance certificate**
  • information on any allergies your child suffers from***
  • receipt for pre-paid charges for the special service, if applicable
  • declaration of consent from parents/legal guardians that their child may travel unaccompanied**
  • the completed special service form*

Save time by printing out the special service form at home. We recommend three copies: one for you, one to go in your child’s small yellow bag (which you will receive at the Lufthansa check-in counter) and one for us.

Tickets for unaccompanied children cannot be booked online; they can only be booked through the Lufthansa Service Centre, your travel agency or at the Lufthansa ticket desk at the airport.

Baggage for unaccompanied children

Your child’s carry-on baggage may be just as large as that permitted for an adult; your child should, however, be able to carry the bag comfortably unaided. Medicines, which must be taken during the flight or at the destination, warm clothing and a small amount of spending money should, of course, also be included. Please also ensure that your child’s checked-in baggage does not exceed the free baggage allowance.

The best of care even before departure

The Lufthansa service counters are the first point of contact for you and your child as soon as you have arrived at the airport. Your child is now in the best hands and will be well looked after from the check-in counter until he or she boards the aircraft. As the parent or guardian, you will need to remain at the airport until the aircraft has actually taken off. This is to ensure that, should the flight be cancelled, you are there to look after your child again.

To the Online Check-in

A number of airports also offer you the option of accompanying your child right up to the departure gate. Please enquire about this at a Lufthansa service counter at the airport. For departures from U.S. airports, Lufthansa can issue you with a so-called ‘gate pass’ on presentation of a valid passport and after clearance by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

Service at Frankfurt and Munich Airport

Dedicated check-in counters

In Departure Hall B at Frankfurt Airport Lufthansa provides a dedicated check-in counter for children who will be travelling alone and their parents. At Munich Airport, counter 447 in the Departure Hall on Level 4 serves the same purpose.

Supervised rooms

At Frankfurt and Munich airports, specially equipped supervised rooms are available for unaccompanied children. Here the time before boarding will simply fly by! Painting corners, children’s cinema, Nintendo games consoles and loads of toys ensure there is no chance of getting bore.

The best of care during the flight and after landing

Welcome on board!

Your child will be welcomed on board the aircraft by a flight attendant and looked after throughout the flight. He or she will be seated close to the flight attendants so that they can be on hand immediately if your child has any questions or concerns. Thanks to toys, crayons and colouring books and a special children’s entertainment programme, your child’s time on board will simply fly by.

If your child has to transfer, he or she will be met at the transit airport by a Lufthansa member of staff and taken to the departure gate for the connecting flight.

Welcome at your destination!

At the destination airport, the flight crew will hand your child over to a member of staff who will then take them to meet the person collecting them from the airport.

Before entrusting your child to the person collecting them, the Lufthansa employee will check that person’s identity by asking to see a valid ID card and comparing it with the details given at the departure airport. Please let the person collecting your child know that they must have a means of identification with them. Even when flights are delayed, your child will, of course, be very well looked after with Lufthansa. We will telephone you as the parent as well as the person who is authorised to collect your child to inform you of relevant delays and the new arrival time of the flight so that there is no unnecessary waiting around at the airport.

At Frankfurt Airport you can collect your child from the Lufthansa support service which is located in the corridor between Departure Halls A and B in Terminal 1; in Munich it is before the exit to Baggage Reclaim.
