unaccompanied children with carer

More than 70,000 children each year travel alone on Lufthansa flights. They are looked after by the Lufthansa special service which ensures that the children and their relatives feel they are in good hands before take-off, during the flight and after landing.

Who must be looked after and who can be looked after?

Children aged between five and 11 years may only fly unaccompanied if they are using our special service or if they are travelling with someone who is at least 12 years old. However, children aged from 12 up to a maximum of 17 years old, who are travelling alone, can also be looked after at the request of their parents.

Important travel documents

Please let us know that your child will be travelling alone, preferably as soon as you book the flight. At your travel agency or at the airport you will then receive a small yellow Lufthansa shoulder bag which ideally your child should keep with them, clearly visible, throughout the entire journey. The bag should hold all the necessary travel documents:

Country-specific requirements for unaccompanied children

Travel from the USA and Canada

Children and teenagers aged between 2 and 18 years travelling alone on an American passport from an airport in the USA or Canada require a consent letter from their parents or legal guardians. This is also the case for children and teenagers aged between 2 and 19 who are travelling alone on a Canadian passport from Canada or the USA. If a child or teenager is travelling with only one parent or guardian they also require a consent letter from the parent/guardian who is not travelling with them.

The regulation is a requirement of the United States Transportation Security Administration and Canada’s Border Services Agency. Children and teenagers who cannot produce a consent letter may be refused boarding.

You will find further information for the USA on www.travel.state.gov and for Canada on www.travel.gc.ca.

Travel from Italy

Children under 14 years of age who are travelling from an Italian airport on an Italian passport must carry a written declaration of consent with them which authorises their temporary care. This applies if the children are travelling alone or are accompanied by persons who are not their parents or legal guardians.
Such an official declaration of consent can be issued at any police station – with the exception of the airport police. If no written declaration of consent for temporary care of the child is produced, the child may be refused boarding.

You will find further information on the homepage of the official website of the ‘Polizia di Stato’, the Italian National Police (in Italian only).

The special service form

Save time by printing out the special service form at home. We recommend three copies: one for you, one to go in your child’s small yellow bag (which you will receive when you book) and one for us.

Baggage for unaccompanied children

Your child’s hand luggage may be just as large as that permitted for an adult; your child should, however, be able to carry the bag comfortably unaided. Medicines, which must be taken during the flight or at the destination, warm clothing and a small amount of spending money should, of course, also be included. You can read more about this subject in our hand luggage regulations.

Please also ensure that your child’s checked-in baggage does not exceed the free baggage allowance.
